Squirrel plushes

I need to make a bunch of little squirrel pelts for a costume I'm working on (they're all going to be strung together when I'm done) and I have no idea how to go about it. I want them to look as realistic as possible. Any help, whether it be advice for making them or suggestions for where to buy them, would be much appreciated. For background, I'm fairly capable when it comes to crafting. Advanced with sewing, average but determined with props and the like. Access to tools and materials is not typically an issue.

hmm... most places squirells are considered rodents, so acquiring real pelts may not be too hard if you know the right people.... that said, small critters are pretty easy to fake, just get faux fur of the right color & texture and cut out the skinned critter shape.
