kitee: yes, cotton sateen would look quite nice. You can always line or innerface it if it's not substantial enough.

Sporkster: linen or something that looks like linen would be quite nice.

SparkyCat13: look to Kwik Sew patterns, they have a lot of 'athletic' type patterns that work great for lots of cosplays.

Hello, everyone. I'm brand new to cosplay.com and I was hoping to get some advice on a cosplay of mine that I'm hoping to get started. I hope someone has some advice. I've never actually made my own cosplay costume before, so I'm pretty nervous about it. I'm also a bigger girl and my convention is in the dead of summer...Lots of things to think about when I wear anything.

Anywho, I'm hoping to cosplay as Relena Darlain from Gundam Wing. I know, it's an oldie, but a goodie! I'm not quite sure whether or not I want to do this outfit or not, but this is the one I'm focusing on right now. It will just depend on what kind of advice I get on here, I guess. I've spoken to a few friends and they also suggest that this would be the best one for me to do. I will post reference pictures below.

What I really want to know is how I can make this costume as easily as possible. I'm just a beginner, but I do want to make it instead of buying it. I'm willing to try and learn different things, too. I just know nothing about fabric. I also want to know how I can make this as comfortable as possilbe since even though I'll be inside the majority of the time, it could still be 100+ degrees. My other issues include the shoes and the helmet. I realize this probably isn't the perfect place for those questions, so I would also appreciate it if someone could point me in that direction too. I know this isn't much to go off of, I apologize for that, but I'm not really sure where else I can get assistance. Thanks so much, everyone!

I am planning to attempt to make Psylocke's newest costume for next year. This will be my first attempt ever of making my own costume, so if you could break things down Barney style for me, that would be greatly appreciated.

I'm planning to cosplay Leda from Casshern Sins.
I'm having trouble deciding the base color for the catsuit. It looks burgundy, but thats a hard color to find in a catsuit.

This is in response to Asian Psylocke's request. I do not want to be the one to discourage you in any way, but this is a very advanced outfit to make if this is your first try in making an outfit. I am writing to you before you go on and spend a lot of money and then end up frustrated with the outcome. This outfit is a form fitting outfit that requires stretch fabric. Stretch fabric is very challenging to work with because it tends at STRETCH while you are sewing it. So you can sew your pieces and put the outfit together and when you try it on, the horror begins. It may warp here and there and everywhere. In order to work with stretch fabric, first the pattern has to be made to accommodate the amount the fabric you choose stretches per inch and then you need a different needle for stretch fabric. Then you may need some type of stabilizer to make sure some of your seams do not stretch while sewing it. When you are sewing it, your best bet is to try it on, meaning do more fittings on yourself than you would regularly do with a cotton base piece, this will help you with being to adjust the pieces as you go along. Then the finishing have to be merrowed to make the seam has an extra safety stitch in case the stitches crack. You have to use polyester thread or stretch thread on your machine and bobbin. Your hems, around the neck and wrist require special attention or stabilizer to help it from warping. I hope that if you do go one with this project, you will understand that it will take up more time and patience to finish it. Please understand again this message is to help you understand prior to spending money and to avoid aggravation. An outfit made out of cotton or Twill/Cotton is a better bet for a first time project.

I've been scouring the internet for any type of fabric that matches the pattern on Carly Nagisa from YGO 5D's shirt.


For all of the fabric's I've found that the colors are right, the stripes aren't wide enough, and when the stripes ARE wide enough the colors are off. It needs to be light blue and white with around 4" stripes (slightly off white would actually be better but I'm not being picky at this point.) I was hoping to use a basic Jersey knit cotton for the shirt but at this point I'll use velvet if it has the right pattern. (Okay maybe not velvet...)
Anyone have any ideas for where to find such a fabric?

Thanks! Luckily I'm not going at this by myself because, like you said, I would get frustrated easy and end up commissioning someone instead. My mother-in-law is going to help me and she is a lot more familiar with sewing than I am. I also just found out that my friend's mom was a seamstress, so I might be able to get her help too.

LoyanteKittay: I think true red looks gorgeous. Have you looked at what other people used for their costumes? I find i very useful, because it gives you an idea of what the colours will look like when the costume is put together.

It's a little hard to guess what the material is in this picture. It looks pleated, and most cotton materials pleat very well. Maybe cotton with a slight sheen (sateen?) to give it an interesting texture.

Hah, something I can help with! I've made Bleach soul reaper costumes before, and I pretty much swear by something JoAnn's has that they call "Linen look solids". It is a linen/rayon blend that is extremely comfortable, machine washable, doesn't wrinkle much, and looks pretty good. (Instructions say machine wash cool delicate, tumble dry, cool iron. It does just fine tossed in the normal cycle, tumble dry, and if you don't let it sit in the dryer and hang it up right away, it doesn't even need ironing unless you feel like it.) It has a nice drape and weight, breathes *much* better than pleather, and is thick enough that you maaaay be able to get away with not lining the pants, if you wear skin tone undershorts. (Make sure to have someone take a picture, with flash, to make sure of this though! Flash can do weird things to some white/light fabrics!)

The fabric comes in both black and white, though you should make sure to wash the black especially to make sure the color is set. I've never had trouble, even with the red, navy, or brown colors, but you can never be too careful. The only thing this fabric doesn't do well is take dye, though on the upside, it doesn't stain very easily either. Don't leave unfinished edges, make sure to at least fray stop cut ends, as this is a woven fabric and will ravel if you just cut a tattered edge and leave it. Because this is a softer fabric with a more natural drape than pleather or quilter's cotton, you will probably need to stiffen the waistband to get the edge to stick up properly, and you may want to use shoulder pads to get the higher/sharper shoulders on that coat. You may also need to consider some sort of stiffener or fastener to get the collar to stand up and the sleeves to stay rolled and crisp looking. Another plus? This fabric, when cut nice and full for a long coat or hakama, billows dramatically when you walk quickly. Hope that helped, let me know if you want more info!

Buy a zentai suit & paint it. Unless you are very experienced doing stretch sewing, that will give you the best looking result.
