Question Ocarina of Time Zelda?

My friend is making an OoT (Adult) Zelda cosplay, but her only problem so far is that she doesn't know how to go about making the pauldrons, as in, how does she know how big to make them? Are there any patterns with measurements she can take?
I'm asking for her right now because cosplay.com isn't allowing registration at the moment, so any information you give to me I will gladly pass on to her!

I found this armor tutorial on dA. For patterning, some people use thin craft foam or bristol board (the thinner, flexible kind). You can tape the pieces together to make sure they fit/work.
