How to Strengthen this Fiberglass Sword?
Hey everyone, it's been quite a while since I've used the cosplay.com forums. Hoping to get re-involved with the community!
My question is this. I'm planning on cosplaying Chrom from Fire Emblem: Awakening and I need to make his sword, Falchion. I have experience with fiberglass thanks to my last couple costumes (they're not up yet), so no problems there. I learned everything about the process from fiberglass blades.com. There, they suggest building any long props around a steel rod/pipe to strengthen it, because apparently despite being very strong, fiberglass blades can warp over time if they're long enough. The problem is, Falchion isn't a solid piece from hilt to tip; there's a big 'ol hole right in the middle of the blade where the pipe would be. Does anyone have any experience in this area? I'd greatly appreciate any help. ![]() |

A core of MDF or wood; or, a pair of metal rods that are bent to curve around the hole.

I've never heard of fiberglass warping over time. The major issue is that fiberglass alone is flexible, so a very long sword is just a bit wobbly.
HDF would also work pretty well for a core here. A cheap coping saw makes pretty quick work of it. The funniest part of this is that "falchion" refers to a type of sword, and the sword pictured is not even remotely a falchion. |

Haha I know. Even the "falchion" from the previous game was nothing like a real one. Thanks for the help! I'll look into mdf and hdf
