When I made mine, the black part was a separate shirt I wore underneath the red jacket. I have also seen people make just the points and make it a part of the skirt by attaching it to the waistband.

Thanks
I think I'm going to make it a low cut shirt with spaghetti straps that crisscross in the back, thanks guys!I have another new problem. I'm trying to sew the lining to the jacket, it was going fine until I sewed around the arm holes. Now it will not turn right side out. My question is will i just have to rip the armholes and stitch them by hand, or is there a way to flip the garment that I'm just not getting? I've been closely following the pattern instructions, however it is very vague about the lining. Any help? |

You'll have to rip out the armhole stitching, unfortunately.
What I'd do is not close the armholes at all, and stitch everything else completely closed. Then you can turn the whole garment right-side out through one of the armholes. She has white trim around the armholes, so you can finish them off with white bias tape encompassing both layers.

It's weird, the pattern shows it working. But oh well Thanks for the confirmation I've never done a lining before. It's a learning experience. I've already ripped it out, pinned it and it is ready for the bias tape. Thanks you guys.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who helped me on this! I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of your advice and help no matter what question I ask. You all are amazing. It's still not done yet but I wanted to show you what i was able to achieve because of you guys. I have to fix the bias tape and I have the entire front closure to work on, but it's getting pretty close!
