There was so much Gangnam Style at the last convention I went to. And then they started playing it at work on the radio. And then I realized it. The reason it was this k-pop song, out of all of them, that caught on in America... It's just as terrible as every other pop song on the radio.

But that's just me. I'm not bothered by vocaloid skits unless they're just dancing around like ninnies the whole time.

Constructing : Soren (Fire Emblem), Fox (RWBY)

Dancing, yaoi/yuri skits, "If You Were Gay," Gangnam style.
Yup. I don't mind Vocaloid skits with dancing and singing since Vocaloid is kind of centered around it.

I don't appreciate skits that don't have original choreography. Like when two VOcaloid cosplayers do the well-know Love&Joy dance.. I just feel like it's simple and everyone and their grandmother has seen it before.

I don't mind dancing when there is a lot of thought and uniqueness to it. I really enjoyed watching this dance at the AB Masquerade last year, because they added twists to the choreography that pertained to Vocaloid;

The next overdone thing? The Harlem Shake.

Gangnam was so 2012 they tell me. Harlem Shake's going to be even worse.
Is it time for me to get up yet?

Oh god! tell me about it, it was funny to watch on youtube and make little jokes, but both are overdone and tiring. I feel like a lot people enjoy doing way to much fanservice, over done dance skits/music meme (or whatever you'll call it.)

Now i don't completely hate fanservice, but if it's done terribly it becomes kind of cheap and awkward.

After reading through this thread I noticed a trend. It seems that every year there's a new meme or trend that becomes worn and overdone by the time the year's over, and even carries on into the next year. Like last year, the two overdone jokes were Gangnam Style and the arrow to the knee meme, but I have a funny feeling that Gentleman (Another PSY song) will be the go-to choice for cosplay dancers, outside of the Hare Hare Yukai/Caramelldansen/Vocaloid skits.

As for my personal feelings, chalk me up for the "Inside jokes" crowd. See, I'm not the biggest anime fan, so whenever I see a skit that's intended to be a fandom joke/meme, I just don't get it. It's like if I did an MLP/Brony meme to someone who either despises MLP with the white hot fury of 1,000 suns or someone who has no knowledge of the memes associated with bronies (20% Cooler, Fluttershy's a tree, etc.). They'll feel alienated and confused, just like I do sometimes with these anime skits.

Also poorly acted/choreographed skits/dances. Now I don't mind an overdone song if it is done properly or if there was some genuine effort put on it, but if it's an act with little to no thought put in it, that's a problem. Maybe this is the theater actor/techie in me, or maybe I have a rare strain of OCD involving cosplay, but I'd rather see a well thought out skit to an overdone song than a godawful dance to a new song. However, at least in the latter, there's plenty of room for improvement here. While I'm on the subject, I mean no disrespect to those who are starting out with masquerades or cosplay in general (I myself am a beginner), since getting on stage can be nerve-racking, but as long as you practice, even a beginner can look like a seasoned veteran.

But yeah, just throwing my hat in the ring.

Skits that aren't really "skits", but just some cosplayer who thinks the masquerade is karaoke night and sings a song by him/herself always get me. I come to the masquerade to see good costuming and entertaining skits, not to listen to someone who (usually) isn't very good at singing stand there and sing. If I wanted to hear the song, I'd listen to it on my own time.

Probably dancing...but if you're going to do a dance, make sure it's very well done (the choreography, the emotion, etc etc), because it's pretty painful to not only watch an overdone dance, but a poorly executed one at that.

Won't everything eventually become overdone?
When in doubt, just take the next small step.
With that next step take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
When the mind is calm you realize the best is still yet to come.

Kind of the point I was going with on my post. Every year has a meme that gets run into the ground, like 2012's Gangnam Style or the countless Avenue Q routines from years past. That's why I like skits that don't have a pointless dance number or end with the Caramelldansen. Don't get me wrong, I love watching dance performances, and if the dance fits the cosplay/skit, go for it (Like the Princess Ballerina walk-ons are magnificent), but otherwise it feels tacked on and a cheap way to end a skit/get a cheap pop from the crowd.
Completed Cosplay:
Red Sniper (TF2)
Wolverine (Marvel Comics)
Mankind (WWE)
The Undertaker (WWE)
JasonPool (Deadpool/Friday the 13th)
Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th)

Working on:
Leatherface (0%)
Macho Man Randy Savage

Hillbilly Jim (WWE)
Road Warrior Thor (Original Marvel concept)

^Yeah, people really need to cool it with the internet memes. Those things have such a short shelf life. I know that after a week, I was well and truly sick of grumpy cat, it didn't help that one of my friends was obsessed with the damn animal and posted it all over facebook, so it kept showing up in my newsfeed.

But really, these memes have a very short lifespan before they get completely dated and start being made fun of, or just plain considered overdone.
