dying shoes

To my friends I'm known to be able to dye anything including things that are labeled "can not be dyed" For the first time I'm having a little trouble one trying to figure out how to dye something. I'm cosplaying a gijinka of shadow lugia

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__...hadowlugia.gif

The colors are odd ones to begin with and I search for a long time trying to find shoes that where the style I needed and the color. I eventually gave up on trying to find the right color because nothing came close and I eventually found these shoes:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I preceded to order them because they were in fact what I wanted and white so I figured it would be easier to dye. Down side is they seem to be made of a synthetic material which I'm not sure would absorb dye even if I tried and if it would not sure how I would go about doing it since I don't want to stick the whole shoe into water. My friends and I have done spray paint on shoes in the past but I find that it comes out globby in some area and peels off over the course of wearing them.

Is there any other type of option I can take that's not spray paint and if dye won't take to the material?

If it's the leather-like synthetic, I'd suggest trying a leather paint. It's flexible, so it doesn't crack on shoes, and permanent (on leather, at least, but I imagine on vinyl, too). I use Angelus brand, which says it's for leather and vinyl. It covers beautifully, though you'll need a few coats if you're going dark to light. For an example look at my Korra costume. There are three armbands, all are painted with Angelus paint. One was dark red leather, one was white, and one was dark brown. All were given a white basecoat first, and they looked like they were the same leather.

I like to get mine from here: http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/10144517-AA.shtml Always incredibly fast shipping and good customer service.

I'll look into it thank you~ hopefully it won't take to many coats since they're white. The price isn't bad either. =3

would you suggest getting a while base coat? Since I see you had a leather that was white. How much would you suggest getting?

yes in general. If you have something dark that you need any lighter color on it, either in small areas or over the whole thing, a white base coat will always help.

What the white base coat does, in addition to hiding the color you don't want, is allows the color you do want to not blend or be dulled by the base color. Your base coat doesn't have to turn out fully white either, only block the base color significantly.

Silk screened tees that have color on black or other dark shades are nearly always done in white first, allowed to dry, the the full color screen is put over the top.

If the shoes are already white or close to it, I wouldn't worry. I only did a white base coat because my leather wasn't a true white, and I needed a true white color for my trims. If you're going to a darker color, you won't even need it to be true white. You'll still need 2-3 coats of paint for a solid color, just make sure you let it dry completely in between coats. It dries relatively fast, you won't be waiting days between coats, I waited an hour and then tested it. I got 2 of the 4 oz bottles, and I managed to paint all of my armbands and have plenty left. You might have enough in 1 oz, but I'd get the 4 oz bottle just to be sure. Nothing worse than running short of product halfway through a job.

The shoes are off white the sight said white but they came in off white, which I really don't mind.

Always better to have more than to have not enough, that's been my general rule as far as sewing and making anything has gone. I was a little meh with the 1 oz bottels afraid that it's not going to be enough, though it doesn't seem like the violet comes a 4 oz right now. At least when I went on there the other day.

Thank you so much. =3

Oh no! Well, the 1oz will go far. 2oz will cover the shoes, no problem, if it comes to buying multiple bottles.
