Glad to see I am not the only one that has trouble avoiding soda! I tend to go for black tea in the morning and iced green tea in the afternoon. Both sweetened with aspartame, though I am trying to cut back on the amount of that.

Am I the only one who has gone off stevia since learning that it is not FDA regulated because it is classed as a "dietary supplement"?

Water for me, I'm from Texas so I was addicted to Dr Pepper but stopped buying cokes all together. Everyone in a while ill crave. Don't mind bottle water, once you get use to pallets of water being left out in 120+ degree sun for like 2 days before they're delivered to you during a deployment, store bought bottled water isn't too bad. I also been stationed in Louisiana for quite a few years and Korea had a high content of lead in their water and I haven't mutated yet and being old school little kids, drinking from water hose lol. I guess I'm opposite I usually can stand flavor mixes no matter how heavy or light concentration just an odd taste to me. Only thing that kills me is bright from SE Texas and living in Louisiana I can't quit sweet tea that would kill a diabetic (no offense) to save my life.

At of y'all ever heard or tried crazy water? It's from Minerals Wells, Texas. Basically it's highly concentrated bottled mineral water, supposed to be great for you. I've never had it but heard it makes you feel better over all and energy like a sugar rush on higher concentration minerals one but like a euphoric feeling sugar rush with out the crash

Drink iced tea! I drink a soda maybe every few months, but that's because I go to disney and we all buy one and share it. My brother and I both gave up soda's about two years ago, and I think that was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made!

I can only do soda or water. If I drink juice it just makes me want soda. I have to go cold turkey and make it a treat or not at all.
I've cut down to diet soda and red bulls. Soda is basically my coffee in the morning, as I can't drink hot things. So I really need it to help me wake up.

You know what it sounds like they need to make? Caffeinated carbonated water.... that would rock... I love the carbonated water that is flavored like lime, lemon, coconut, and stuff like that, and if it was caffeinated that would be awesome!

I vaguely remember caffeinated water being sold maybe a decade ago. Dunno if any of it was carbonated - I guess you could put some non-alcoholic extract in some caffeinated water (assuming it's still being sold nowadays) with a carbon dioxide tablet.

It always struck me as strange that people have a hard time giving up soda. I haven't been able to drink it since I was a kid (the carbonation messes me up in a bad way, my teeth are too soft to deal with the acid, etc). My usual drinks are milk, juice (orange, aloe, fruit blends), coconut water, lemonade, cucumber/watermelon water, iced tea, black/white/green tea (unsweetened or with honey or whatever), lassi, spiced cider in fall, cocoa and eggnog in winter...

I don't like straight up water, but I wouldn't say there's any lack of diversity in beverages.

lack of diversity probably comes from looking at the koolaid section at the store,
theres only 5-6 flavors, then 2-3 "energy" flavors, and tea,
looking at crystal light, they boast 30 or so flavors, but if you brake it down its more like
8 teas, 4 lemonade, 3 orange 2 strawbery

in general if you cut out lemon, cherry, orange/citrus, raspberry, and the newish craze for pommegranats, you might have 1-2 flavors left... other than grape so maybe 3

originally i thought of doing the fruit flavoring water, but after i looked, its not worth the price, not knowing if ill even like it, (juice and flavoring water isnt the same imo)

i think i said this in my last post but as much as i thought zerowater was good enough,
itd cost me 30$ every 4 weeks or so, so its way OP

however, the calorie cut, i managed to lose 10lbs
(i have to attribute part of it to the unnessessecary yard work i had to do...
re-planted the grass)

i think what makes it hard to quit soda is... yes cafine is adictive (i guess)
but more so, you just cant get the same fruity/fizzy taste otherwise

but yay, i lost a few pounds so im happy, thats what this was about in the first place,

You may want to consider "resetting" both your palate and body chemistry by going off ALL sugar for a few weeks/months (I had to do this myself recently due to a bit of a candida build-up.) It's not at all easy, as sugar triggers the same portions of the brain as certain drugs such as meth, cocaine and alcohol. Yes, caffeine is addicting, but sugar is equally, if not more, so. And you will have to also drop some carbs, veggies and fruits, like wheat, carrots, corn, most fruit, etc..., as your body will convert those to sugar as well.

The first few days to a week of being off of sugar, you will have actual withdrawal symptoms - shakes, super sugar cravings, fogginess, weakness, agitation, etc... you may have to restart several times. It was somewhat painful.

That said, what I found it did for me is let me get back on track to having reasonable amounts of sugar. I never wanted to eliminate sugar and carbs permanently - I'm a proponent of a balanced dietary approach - but at the beginning of this year I had gone way overboard and was over-indulging to the point of illness. After two months sugar-free, I now find I'm better able to control my cravings, and when I do indulge, having smaller amounts is equally satisfying.

Some more about sugar and sugar addiction here:

http://www.webmd.com/diet/ss/slideshow-sugar-addiction

On a side note, as is mentioned in the above link, apart from the debate over side effects, one of the main proven problems with artificial sweeteners is that they can INCREASE cravings for sugar, particularly if you've developed a physical addiction.

Nevertheless, the sensation of drinking soda is, in itself, hard to kick. So to answer the original poster's question about soda substitutes, if only to help ween yourself off sugar, there are the erythritol and stevia sweetened, zero calorie drinks, Zevia, sold at Whole Foods and Walmart that I think folks mentioned earlier. I personally cannot stand the taste of stevia, or other artificial sweeteners other than pure erythritol, they give me a headache, but it might help others.

I had to quit soda because I was drinking so much caffeine I started forming lumps in my breasts and I slowly switched over from all I drink is soda to one soda a day to none, it wasn't that difficult for me and now its hard for me to drink soda because of the carbonation. It also was very bad for my teeth and they're a lot whiter and healthier now.

I think the disconnect in my logic is looking at koolaid/flavored water/whatever as one or two options with a few different choices in flavoring, while you look at the flavors individually. I personally would find drinking those kinds of things boring taste-wise. To me, a lot of those types of drinks have an acidic sweetness to them, so whether it's grape or cherry or whatever, it all tastes like one thing.

It's interesting how people have different viewpoints.

Have you tried coconut water? It's really good for rehydration after workouts (or if you're me, sneaking into movie theaters because they only sell soda), and I personally love the taste. It's got sugar, but it's not empty like a lot of lemonades and stuff are. Price-wise, it's more expensive than soda, especially when you buy small containers, but when you're used to paying a dollar for two liters everything's going to seem expensive.

i've been so good since my last post here. haven't had any in the house and have been drinking more water. when i want something sweet in the evening i have lemonade, and at supper i have chocolate almond milk (another addiction lol).
I had some coke on the weekend because we went up north to visit family. I wasn't going to buy any but my mom got a 1L bottle knowing i would be at her place for supper on friday. nobody else really drinks coke, they're all pepsi people. but what the heck it was a treat and i stretched it out for 2 days, i figured that was the end of it but on our long drive home on sunday we stopped to grab lunch. i waited outside with the dog since it's waaaay too hot to leave her in the car for even a second, while hubby ran in to get us some subs. he comes out and hands me a coke. *sigh* but again i made it last 2 days, and it was a small bottle. so i had some for 4 days in a row >_< i thought it would make me want to buy some but i had no problem avoiding it at the grocery store. woohoo. i'm at the point that i really can just see it as a once in a while treat and not a need. awesome
