No, but then again, a topless man and a topless woman is not exactly the same thing. Not only that, are we assuming that the topless people are all over 18? Because that enters into a whole other set of legalities and issues. Men are going to find a topless much more appealing than vice versa. If you're comfortable running around with your boobs out, hey, good on'ya and thanks, you know, as long as you're over the age of 18. Men are going to want to see topless women. We PAY to see them. It's not so simple as "Oh, well, do you get all weird about shirtless GUYS?!" No. Because they don't have breasts and I'm not attracted to men. Well...most don't. And even then, not like women do.

This, is not what I meant by my previous statements.

Yes the people in question I'm talking about is females being topless saying their cosplaying guys from Free!. I want them to wear clothes because its far easier for them to be identified as cosplaying from Free! but I'd settle for them wearing wigs. Incidently it would have been easier for them to wear a towel over their breast (like what FDP did) rather then them just photoshop and I do not have a problem with that.

Where do you live in Cali? I cosplay from Naruto and Saria from TLOZ. We are looking for more people in our group.. c:

Fanservice really isn't pointless, It is like pairing art, but with cosplayers. I don't really see how fanservice is any much different than any other types of poses.
Also, they probably just want a makeout picture because they really like the couple/pairing.. Especially if it is cracky and their isn't much art for it. It is always interesting to see. ^^
Just one of the many scenarios you can put your characters in.
It's an art form.. (:

I'm really questioning if these pictures of topless Free cosplayers really exist. In my experience, people who complaining about skimpy cosplays often exaggerate what they've seen or take it out of context.

Like after one Naka-Kon there were pictures of Evangelion cosplayers who just wore nipple pasties and the rest painted on. After seeing these pictures, people made it seem like they were running all over the con like that. In truth they were models for an 18+ bodypainting panel and had covered themselves up when they left the panel room.

I don't feel comfortable when people ask me questions about how I make stuff. I mean I know how to some stuff but I have friends that can do this a lot better than I can. I mean a lot better. I know the basics and the basic concept and can even do some of it just not nearly as good as them. So I get a little uncomfortable when people ask me how I do stuff. Plus it doesn't help I'm not really good at explaining things either and occasionally they throw me under the bus. But in truth we all know where exactly I stand skill wise.

I honestly don't get the fandom with Supernatural /Sherlock. I'm always seeing girls crossplaying characters from the show with beard makeup. Its not that I dislike it or anything, its just that I dont get it (?__?)

Is it any different than crossplaying any other character with a beard ? There was a girl that did an awesome Thorin costume from The Hobbit and Thorin has a beard and it was a pretty freaking epic costume and the fact that the beard is fake doesn't really bother me.

I have also seen a hilariously good costume a girl did of one of the characters from Supernatural, Bobby Singer. I think it's admirable to pull off a character from either of those shows (though I haven't really seen any of Sherlock I've seen pictures) and have people recognise you because their costumes are just "normal people clothes" and you have to get enough cues right to not look like you're just another person off the street.

A good costume is a good costume. A costume done with heart is still something even if it's not technically "good".

Yeah, Supernatural and Sherlock have their share of fans that do some ridiculous things - but every fandom has them. Hell, The Hobbit has them, Doctor Who has them - any large "fandom" has them.

I just don't see what there's not to get. They're fans of the shows, they're dressing up as characters from the shows. It's not really any different than any other cosplay. Yeah, some people go farther than others, some use it as a grounds for "shipping" - but like I've never seen that in girl-on-girl and girl-on-guy costumes - that's even easier to find, hell I've searched Pokemon character names to find reference to help people with their costumes and found some freaky-ass porn. I can't really get mad at girls for finally getting in on that too, if that's what you're referring to.

And if not... it's just cosplay. Character has a beard why's someone going to leave it out just because they can't grow their own ?

This isn't an attack on you, just me rambling again.

I don't get why girls dress up like dudes when a girl obviously can't ever look like a dude.

(also from what I know about supernatural and sherlock, from before I tumblrsaviored it all, there are literally no female characters that fans like because especially supernatural is a romanticized version of Life As Dudely Dudes Who Do Important Dudely Things No Seriously Women Need to Get Out. So I'm surprised that more men aren't in love with Supernatural considering it helps make women comfortable with hating women by having the guys in it be hot.)

Yeah, the show has very few female characters who aren't either caricatures or dead and/or undeveloped. My friend convinced me to watch it before I knew anything about it and I have enjoyed it for what it is while still being critical of it. I found it refreshing at the time that a serial "investigation/monster" show for once prominently featured working-class characters without much formal schooling instead of elite agents with prestigious degrees and talents - in a positive light instead of as backwards yokels or wastes of space who need to be saved or enlightened.

I'm glad that I got in on it before seeing the Tumblr fallout - it was that kind of stuff that kept me away from New Who for a long time, too.

But sadly, the fans can be part of the problem and not just background noise to be ignored. There were good female characters who had potential - but the ones that really come to mind were specifically killed off because fans weren't receptive to the idea of a potential canon romantic interest getting in the way of their 'ships/self-projection. It's a cycle - and no one wants to stop and get off.

To be honest, I do quite enjoy watching it just to critique it because there is so damn much to critique.

When my female cosplayer friends on facebook upload nothing but boob shots. Literally every picture should be rightly titled "Behold! My glorious ta-tas!" And these are girls who make their own cosplays. I'd like to see some of that hard work. If I wanted to see your boobs I'd look at your non-cosplay pictures.

I'm sorry, but its just that on tumblr I see way too many "crossplayers" from those series and most of the time its people that don't even put enough effort to look like the character besides putting on beard makeup. Maybe I worded it wrong but I just don't get how someone can put little effort (like people who cosplay L from Death Note with little effort) which from what I see on tumblr occurs with those series. Maybe I'm seeing on side of a fandom but thats my opinion

Whee : Now that I'm at my desktop :

Why not just search the series or a character on here? It's easy to rectify a skewed perspective.

There is one series that I totally hate - I fucking hate Hetalia. And there are a lot of really bad Hetalia costumes and lots of gratuitous photoshoots and drama and whatnot. BUT I can recognise and admire the craftsmanship of a well done costume from it - and I don't wonder why the fans make bad costumes or do stupid things because there are unskilled and/or uncaring people in every fandom and young people were making awkward sex poses in public since way before cosplay.

And there are several awesome people on here that are in that fandom and I still think they're awesome even if I don't like a certain series that they do like. And I would never single Hetalia out for being a fine purveyor of cracky pairing photos because I have seen so many from so many places, it's not really exclusive. I've seen it happen to Jeeves and Wooster - and if it can happen there I'm pretty sure it can happen anywhere. By the way, whoever has the missing DVD from my box set I will find you and do that thing Liam Neeson threatens to do.

Let's not forget to mention Star Trek. Have you seen the stuff people wore and drew about that one even back in the day ?

It happens in literally any fandom that has young people as fans. Doctor Who is an ancient fandom and it still has it because the thing about huge fandoms is that new fans join every day - and lots of them are young people just discovering a thing. And young people do indeed do silly, poorly-thought-out and foolish things. Young people don't always have $300 to chuck at a costume and that's okay, they're allowed to be stupid and have fun, too.

And there is no shame in not having the skill or desire to do an A level costume. If they don't need that to make them happy and have fun, well the joke's on me if I make fun of them because they spent a hell of a lot less money than I did.

Bad and low effort costumes happen in every fandom. You probably just notice these more because the breaking of gender conventions is something you're not used to and are perhaps put off by it and focus on it. One of my female friends is doing a costume with a fake beard I she's gonna be so cute, it will probably not be a great costume - I don't have time to make it for her so it's going to be her first effort with everyone pitching in a little and largely with things bought on eBay and at thrift stores. But I'm pretty sure she'll have fun.

Thinking about it, that's the power of cosplay for some, isn't it ? To turn yourself into someone totally different ? Even if it's not effective for one viewer or most, it's what a person feels that's important. I've seen people be thrilled about some pretty "not good" costumes and I think that's genuinely great.

Confession: I've started bringing one Nyotalia outfit to every con, just as a little escape from people.

It's hetalia, so automatically I am completely ignored by people that hate all hetalia fans and wish death on them because of the fandom (because the hetalia fandom is the only bad fandom, right)

And it's NYOtalia, so instantly I'm ignored by any yaoi-crazy weeaboos(those seem to be pretty rare around here, I usually only get stalked in my Belarus cosplay anyway).

It's just a great way to walk around the convention and not get overwhelmed.
