Good Compact sewing machine for beginners?

I used to sew a bit with my grandma when I was younger, but.. aside from that- I haven't sewn in ages...soon enough I want to take photography and sewing courses but any good suggestions for a beginner? One of my first outfits I want to make is Briar Rose's dress from Sleeping Beauty (not the gown)

Look into the Janome and Brother brands. Their low-end machines are good for beginners and are pretty solid for the price point they're sold at. I wouldn't expect to be able to sew lots of thick twill layers on them, but for entry-level sewing and lightweight garments they'd be fine. It's also easy to get more feet and accessories for those brands.
FF9 cosplay? Hit me up!

I now have a Tumblr. Sometimes I use it.

I second Janome. They make a "Jean Machine" that lists at under $150 US and is a small, beginner friendly machine, that also has strong enough gearing for sewing denim. Frankly, when it comes to costumes, there is always going to be something with a lot of layers or a heavy material, so getting a stronger machine is worth it.
Nothing is impossible, but some things are very expensive.

My Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/penlowe I make non-fitted custom things to ship within the continental US. I only do fitted garments for those whom I can meet in person.
