Resin on insulation foam

I know this gets talked about a lot, but I've been doing some research for the insulation foam daggers I've been working on, and due to budgeting I'll likely be sticking with polyester resin. However, I know that polyester resin will eat through foam if I don't seal

What should I use to seal the foam, and how many layers would be considered pretty safe before I go crazy with the resin coats? I've used a combo of Gesso and Mod Podge in the past (mixing the two together and brushing it on, then sanding it a bit), but I'm wondering what other suggestions or products would be better for this.
