Crossplay V Genderbending

Good Morning, the title states the topic of this post fairly clearly, but I wanted to poll this forum's thoughts on preferences and reasons for choosing one over the other.

The reason for this is Ohayocon is magical girl themed, so most of the appropriate characters are of course female.

Side Note: Is this forum just for crossplaying, or can I ask genderbending costume stuff here as well if that is the route I decide to go?

I think this forum is just for crossplay and that there is a "genderbent" forum or sub-forum or running thread if you scroll down more.

I think it's personal choice. They're two different things and it's up to whoever wants to make and wear the costume what they want to do.

Thanks, I'll have a look into some of the other threads.

I guess I can't ask you guys to tell me what I want to do, I'll have to make that decision for myself... Great...

Thanks.

Genderbending is taking a character and redesigning as the opposite gender. Crossplay is cosplaying a character with a gender opposite yours and not changing design elements.

You can do both at the same time, it's fun.

We can still give you advice, and help you with your decision though.

Genderbending is accepted more around where I am, the normals don't really hate it. look at all the fem. ironmans and male harley and panty and stocking

Crossplaying could be fun,

on my halloween it pretty much accepted and I saw lots of crossplay, though they were intentional bad ones but it was cool

It's all about what you want there both different and challenging in there own way
Gender bending- probably more comfortable no padding or binding needed. Some characters just don't translate though, I've never seen a really good female Bane or male Sailor Moon, not saying it can't be done. Also creative liberty is a must
Crossplay- gender dimorphism can be a pain in the neck depending on your body type and the character you’re representing. If you want to go all out padding and makeup are essential
Whichever you pick just remember the only rule in cosplay is have FUN! Good Luck ^-^

I just prefer crossplaying. Male character designs are more interesting to me and I'm more comfortable crossplaying a male character than I would cosplaying a female character.

That being said, I have made genderbend crossplays in order for myself to feel more comfortable being that character.

I thoroughly enjoy crossplaying. I only have 2 female cosplays and the rest are male. I find the male characters more fun to do. I'm rather flat-chested too, so I can pull off a male easier. :P I also genderbent Sasuke Uchiha as well since his first Shippuden outfit was more suited to a male chest.

My sister crossplays too, but she cosplays Portgas D Ace and (since he's topless) she genderbends him to wear a bikini top and shorts. It's a nice way to change the character to suit your liking and still be recognisable.

Thank you all so much for your replies and your insight. What I am essentially taking away from this is:

Crossplaying is more fun.

Genderbending is easier.

So, I'll probably make the decision based on the character I decide to do and my level of skill with a sewing machine.

Not really. They are both fun and they are both hard.
Crossplaying: with the binding and extra padding. GenderBend: You can go to the bathroom easier with this that crossplaying. Regular cosplaying is hard enough. ._.

I wonder if an Avatar could teach me advanced gender-bending.

For now, I'll stick to gender playing: not changing design elements, and wearing it as the opposite gender anyway. Turns out that's lots of fun
