Anime Schoolgirl Shirt
In both The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Inuyasha I've seen a specific kind of school SHIRT. The top looks as though it either pulls over the head like a sweater, or zips up the back with an invisble zip. Could someone enlighten me as to what kind of pattern to use, and also what kind of material? Could such a shirt be made by reconstructing an ordinary white shirt?

When I made Haruhi's uniform for a friend, I put a zipper in the back of the skirt. It keeps it very smooth and makes it easy for her to slip on and off. I actually used this pattern for the skirt and modified the top to have the deeper v-front and made the sailor collar longer. I know it's a children's pattern, but my friend is small enough to still fit into them...she's just really really tiny.

The skirt is pretty easy, and the main shirt is very simple, as is the collar. If you are making Haruhi's shirt, it's a bit trickier just because you have to lengthen the ties of the collar and the v-neck of the shirt, but just draft it out of cheap scrap fabric first, then cut your good stuff. That way, you can play with the cheap stuff til you get it right and don't waste your good fabric.

It's called a Middy Blouse, btw, for Midshipman, the ordinary working sailors.

Thank you Mehdia for your suggestions: I';ve found a pattern which I will try to alter for the shirt. I found a tutorial on youtube for the skirt which should work. By the way, do you think the cotton that sheets are made of is too thin for the actual skirt and blouse?
Penlowe, thanks for the info ![]() |

I used cottons for the one I made. Just check to see that it isn't too sheer against your skin. If it's a little thin, you can always line it or wear something skin toned underneath. The blue should be fine, the white is what you will have to worry about.
