Do You Buy Art At A Con?

What kind of art have you bought before at a con? How much did you pay for it?

Got any pics to show off your prize?

I bought a handmade Rarity cellphone charm. =w=

I paid $5 for it, and she didn't have it on Saturday when I went, and since I requested it, she made it for me, and I picked it up on Sunday. It is made out of clay and is super cute.

I don't have any pictures of it, yet, even though I've had it for over a year.

Personally, I love to check out the artists alley, and/or art show display spaces at conventions. There's a lot of good artists putting out either original art, or fanart. That, and also artists doing their own smallpress comics! Prints tend to range $5-$10 in general, depending on who the artist is, what the print finish quality is like (ie, glossy cardstock over regular paper, etc) and what size the print is, too!

And, speaking as both an artist and a comic producer, I love seeing the creativity that smallpress can bring!

Nah, I never buy art at a con. A lot of it is done with amazing skill, but putting fanart on the walls just isn't my thing. I see pieces anywhere from $5 (underpriced) to $250 (ranging from wildly overpriced prints to just about right for pro-grade original artwork).

Being that I am selling in the AA myself; no not usually on occasion Brando commissions an artist he likes for something of his original characters and it's always been really interesting to see different artists take on his own character. But for the most part we're usually too wrapped up in our own stuff to even have TIME to see other artists in the first place.

I do all the time! At Philly wizard world comic con, my son bought some great prints for his room. I've bought originals before and beautiful signed prints, but my favorite thing to do is commission artists at the con. I've paid anywhere from about $5 for regular prints, to over $100 for original art and commissioned art.

Yep! I've only been to two conventions so far, but I think commissioning artists is becoming my favorite part of attending.

Todd Nauck:

I met Todd at Phoenix Comicon 2013. I browsed through his art and noticed he drew Lady Sif before, so I thought it would be cool to commission a B&W headshot of her. His B&W headshots were $40.

Since I really liked Sif, I then commissioned a B&W upper body of Kid Loki for $100. While he was drawing, the fire alarm went off. Before we parted ways, he told me that I could e-mail him and give him my address (since he doesn't live far from me). When I got home, I e-mailed him. And later I get the commission in the mail and it was colored! Along with a signed copy of his artbook and a note. ^_^

I met Todd again at San Diego Comic Con and commissioned a B&W upper body of Green Arrow for $100. I originally asked for a headshot, but, before he started drawing I asked, "Wait, can I get a bow in the image if I commission upper body?" and he said "Yes" so I decided to pay more for upper body. xD

Tom Nguyen:

Tom Nguyen was right next to Todd Nauck at SDCC. I looked through his portfolio and noticed he drew some Green Lantern comics, so I commissioned Saint Walker. I think it was $80?

Jim Cheung:

I met Jim at SDCC as well, and he would sketch for you if you bought two prints. You had to have something for him to draw on. Luckily, what I wanted was for him to draw on my blank variant of YA v2 #1, so it was perfect! Miss America Chavez. :-)

Shannon O'Connor:

I saw her paper cut-outs at Phoenix Comicon and thought they were really adorable. Link was pre-made, but Kid Loki was a commission. My friend commissioned her to do a paper cut-out of Teemo.

I buy prints as well.

It's pretty much all I buy at conventions now. I have a sketchbook that I take with me and if I see a piece that I love I'll pick that up too.

Yes, but I don't do a lot of hang-on-walls art unless they're done like poster prints. I usually buy stuff like buttons, cell charms and stickers.

I love supporting artists. Sometimes the prices on comic art, sketches at Cons are pretty steep though.

A lot of people shopping there don't realize you can buy the actual pages and covers from your favorite comics for the same price as a custom sketch. For example:

Other than the cost of my hotel room, art is my biggest expense at a con. My Artist Alley for Anime Central this year was $500.

I usually don't buy anything at cons. I have a friend I sometimes commission to do terrible things, though, because money is a fun motivator.
