Thoughts on A-fest 2014?

This in and of itself is needed. Basically your overall complaint department, perhaps to help "Anime"fest become a better anime con. Let me start:

Video rooms: Why in the world are we showing American cartoons in an anime convention? Even the small anime cons (*cough cough* TexanCon) show at the most "Disney" anime (aka Princess Mononoke). Even worse, you're showing this at Prime time, aka the time for older teens/young adults. Show the kid's stuff in the morning, teens afternoon, and older teens/adult around 6-7pm (stuff like Hellsing Ultimate).

Dealer's Room: It seems that despite a better arrangment, there was a noticable lack of certain dealers, mainly cutom figurines, video games, and older anime (last year I found the Dirty Pair here). It was good to see Funimation in there however. Also, how about more than one entrance so there isn't a line just to get in?

Con elevators: Where were the "hall monitors?" It's difficult to get up to your room from the lobby when everyone was loading up on the second floor.

Dances/Raves: Heard a lot of complaints about having a lot of people in one spot on the second floor. They danced, and swore the floor was moving.

Am I going to A-fest next time? Doubtful. This is the second year I've been disappointed, and because I have been going since 2001, I gave a second chance. Nothing against the con staff (who are still quite the awesome group), but I will most likely look to another con or two in 2015.

/Anything I forget, or you had an issue with? Please reply.

I agree so much about the hall monitors. We were coming down the elevator trying to get to the first floor, and about 10 people forced their way in on the second floor even though we were going down (which we told them) so when we got to the first floor we had to shove our way through (because of course they forced us into the very back corners) and no one would move or temporarily get out so we could exit.

As far as your dealers complaint, I actually saw quite a bit of older animes (not sure what you consider 'older' but I'd say 10+ years) but I know our table alone had Lupin the 3rd, Yu Yu Hakusho, 90's Sailor Moon merch, Rozen Maiden, and a few other older series. I do however agree about the lack of video games, there was one entire table that was selling nothing but BOARD games, but I never saw any video games, but then again I wasn't seriously looking for them, I just didn't notice any. And as far as custom figurines, I'm not 100% sure what you mean by that, but if you mean like fully custom built and painted, then that's because they aren't allowed. Unless they are licensed products or you have an entire business only making custom figures (and even that might be pushing it) they aren't allowed in the dealers room, so you might have had better luck with the artist alley for stuff like that.

As for the convention itself, I don't have much to say, I didn't attend any panels or raves or anything, I was working a table in the dealers room all weekend ... but I can say that I was extremely disappointed in the cosplay contest. I didn't attend, but I heard from a few people that there was a massive decrease in the number of entrants. I'm not sure why this was, but I figured changing the day the contest is held on would improve the contest.

Just to throw in my two cents on the Video rooms (I was a volunteer for vid): the schedules were done intentionally like that to deter the teens/young adults from "getting it on" during those times in the video rooms.

Only issues I had were people who would congregate in large groups in walkways, and all but one of the dealers I purchased things from were on their phone/tablet IGNORING CUSTOMERS. I was disappointed that the one dealer I was looking for wasn't there this year.

man. I don't really have many complaints. I agree that there should've been SOMEONE monitoring the elevators. I know people probably think it was awesome, but it's NOT awesome to get on a dark elevator with complete strangers because IDIOTS removed the lightbulbs. Stuff like that will probably deter the Sheraton from wanting any cons using them.

I was actually VERY surprised that there was SO many people. The artist alley had me spending close to $100. I never do that. I NEVER find anything I want and this year, I had to actually pick and choose. Bless you amazing awesome artist *U*

Also, the FOOD TRUCKS. OMG. You have NO IDEA how happy I was to be able to purchase Thai Tea.. I probably spent like $25 at that truck... SO GOOD.

And the dealers room... was lacking to me? I mean I was looking for probably way too specific things xD but there could've been a LOT more One Piece merch... WHICH WAS GOOD in a way because I spent SO MUCH in the artist alley I didn't really buy anything in the dealers room xDDD

All in all, I would go back a million times over, but not if it's back to being on Labor Day weekend. My sis and I work at a job that you can't take off holidays, so this was a rare amazing little trip for us ;u; we hadn't been in 6 years!

This was my third year in a row attending Animefest and I can't say I have many complaints about the con save for the dark elevators that were mentioned earlier. I noticed that there was a lot more people at the con on Friday than there has been the last two times I attended.

Alas, I already own Sailor Moon and Rozen Maiden. I was looking for Battle Athletes and Star Ocean EX, hehe. I consider older as at most 2000 (I'm old, sue me

I was looking for Neo Geo MVS or AES games, and I couldn't even find Game Boy games. There were literally zero dealers there with video games, where in the past there were at least one or two.

I can't remember the person's name, but he's been in A-kon since the Adam's Mark (not Sheraton) and Animefest since the Hyatt. This year, he wasn't in the Dealer's Room or in Artist Alley. Last year, he was in the back corner.
Basically, it seemed to me like this con had a lot of the "general" figurines, and a few of the specials I already own. Heck, I found out that there was a third large One-Piece mermaid figurine (which I was looking for) and all I found was the tiny ones I already had. I had to order it on eBay.

There was that, and also a massive decrease in at least decent cosplay, and a LOT more Disney/Marvel. I don't mind good Disney cosplay (half expected it when I saw more disney movies in the video rooms), but a moderately obese Ariel is scale spandex? C'mon...
Generally at this con, I take 40-60 pictures just from in the halls. This year, I had 8...

I think AFEST is slowly turning into another All-con, which granted I have nothing against All-con, but I think AF would be better off staying more anime oriented. If they keep steering away from anime, they're going to lose a lot of attendees and it'll take a while for them to get back up to their numbers they've been at previously for the other genres they're bringing in.

I honestly don't know why conventions like this do these things, if it's not broke, why try to 'fix' it? I enjoyed AF soooooooo much more when it was at the Hyatt, and I have a feeling that different people were running it, because they never had the problems they do now, and they didn't make such poor decisions.

A-Kon is actually the convention trying to become Texas' DragonCon. I've spoken with the heads of AFest before many times and they have stressed the desire to keep it as Japanese oriented as possible. The issue comes when not enough people submit panels, they have to accept panels and events that are not as Japanese-oriented. So it's not just them, and they are trying.

I think the reason less people were part of the cosplay contest is all in the timing. It was on a Sunday evening, on a weekend that was not Labor Day, so not as many people were able to stay all four days. Sunday is not a "prime time" convention day, like Saturday is. They also combined the Walk-Ons and the Skits, which is fine, but I think the date needs to be changed back to where it is on a Saturday.

Believe it or not I was hoping the date changes would have allowed for a lot more dealers and cosplayers on the floor. Alas very few good Anime ones came. Also was hoping more events... and they showed Disney. Show Disney, and you get disney cosplay. At the very least show classic anime. Course I think they need to limit the raves and parties at night as well.

The dates for AnimeFest are largely dictated by the availability of hotel function space and rooms in Dallas. Traditionally we have been on Labor Day Weekend, but we are being driven away from this date by large religious groups and sporting events on this weekend that are consuming all the hotels. We are now shifting to early to mid August and for 2017 and beyond we will likely be Thu-Sun rather than Fri-Mon.

It is absolutely our intention to remain focused on anime and manga. We will continue to try to align programming around this, but we will allow a certain amount of off-topic programming. We agree that in 2014 we had too much off topic programming and too many duplicate panels held by different groups. We are dedicated to having fan run programming, but we are still figuring out the best ways to manage this.

We've paid a lot of money to get a license from Disney to show the Ghibli films. We made the decision that since the license allowed for showing most of Disney's catalog we would not restrict it to just Ghibli films. We are reconsidering this based on comment like the ones above and we also agree that we don't want to drift to far from our anime/manga focus. Part of our consideration was to the parents and siblings of anime fans that tend to be tag-alongs to the con and providing a small amount of content to keep them entertained. We felt that it might make it easier for some anime fans who must bring family members along, to attend. That argument is a bit of a slippery slope though as that could justify all kinds of non-anime programming.

Also note that attendance to the video theaters has been in a steady decline since Internet streaming of anime became readily available. The theaters used to be a large part of the appeal of anime cons. Now many cons are getting rid of them completely. I think we will likely continue having the theaters even if almost no one attends them. Maybe it's just the nostalgia for us, but it's part of who we are and where we came from. We are also currently considering making some or all of the theaters a more social room rather than a dark theater room. Lit theaters with tables which allow quiet discussions and commentary rather than dark hushed theaters. We would love feedback on this...

We do not know exactly why cosplay contest entries have declined so drastically. Maybe people are upset with how prior contests were run? Maybe it's because we're not part of the World Cosplay Summit? I'd love to hear your feedback on this. In the meantime, we're trying to put more focus on running a good competition and we've added cash prizes (up to $1000).

I really appreciate all of the feedback, especially the actionable negative comments. It helps us to improve.

Sincerely,
--

I haven't been to AFest since 2011 but I want Rjenks to know that I highly doubt the Cosplay Summit has anything to do with the amount of cosplay contest entries. I attend several conventions (mostly in the midwest region) and none of them are Summit cons and all have decent numbers of entries. I was disappointed to learn you guys went back to having one contest rather than 2. Me and my group were planning on entering both till we learned we couldn't (now we are only doing walk-ons). But honestly we assumed you guys had good reason to have to switch for whatever reason. But I have no idea if any of that is effecting your numbers. In the past (well 2009-2011) I've really enjoyed AFest's cosplay contest and honestly the convention as a whole. Sadly, after this year unless I can change jobs I won't be able to return for quite some time. (I work at a community college in Kansas City and we CANNOT ask for time off around when school starts which is sadly when the convention is taking place 2016 onward.) BUT again I defs don't hold it against you guys. <3

And wait...are people seriously complaining about showing Ghibli movies? Um most cons I go to would love to do that but can't afford that? It's anime even if it's owned by Disney? Huh?

I didn't go last year so I cannot comment on the rest of things, but our group was extremely upset to find out that the previous habit of having Runway one day and skits another was no longer something you do. It actually meant we dropped making certain costumes and can only enter one. I always talked-up your con to other cosplayers because you were one of the very few conventions that acknowledged that skit participants can also be skilled craftsmen and worthy also of those awards. It's tough having to "choose" between entering a skit you have worked hours to perfect vs a costume you've spent hours to sew. For people like our troupe, it's not a choice we like having to make because we love both so much.

I feel that it's very common amongst convention runners to view skits as a lesser side-element of the big deal Runway competition and we always felt that giving them each their own night gave the performers in both the spotlight they deserved. I know that most conventions that are only 3-days cannot manage to fit it in the schedule, but your convention was one we always greatly looked forward to because of that. Needless to say, I was pretty upset to find out that we couldn't enter both this year as they were both the same night. I hope that in the future you consider going back to the separate night events as it allows people to enter both and I'm certain it'll boost your numbers in both.
