How To Use Mini Patterns

Making full patterns out of miniature book-patterns.

Small-sized Kagamine Rin, Len, KAITO and MEIKO patterns have all been included in this magazine. Once enlarged with a copier, they can be used as regular patterns. Choose the method easiest for you and create your own easily-useable patterns. Let's try!

METHOD A

1) Copy the patterns onto gridded paper directly using your own measurements and the grids provided. The grid will help you size reproduce the pieces and draft your pattern more accurately.

2) Cut the pattern from the larger version you've just made (trace your pattern onto pattern paper, then chalk it onto cloth!)

METHOD B

1) Use a copier to enlarge the patterns in the book with the enlargments suggested.

2) Connect the pieces of your copies by lining them up carefully and then gluing them together. Make sure all of the lines match as well as humanly possible.

3) Use pattern paper over your copy to trace your final pattern. At this stage, check measurements for all pieces and trim/adjust accordingly.

For more construction information on these costumes:
http://layers.dengeki.com

*NOTE: only METHOD 1 will work with the scans I've provided. The enlargements are deliberately off with the scans. If you want to use LAYERs' patterns rather than drafting your own, please purchase a copy of the book yourself.

Mini-Pattern: MEIKO (VOCALOID)

Passionate Simplicity in Red!

A minimalistic red costume for a sexy look. This simple design is a great beginner's costume!

Pattern Size (actual pattern): 25%
*the scans don't match this estimate. You will need to draft your own pattern or purchase a copy of the magazine and use those to enlarge. These images are for reference only.

Materials:
red twill 150cm x 80cm
open zipper 30 cm x 1
conceal zipper 18 cm x 1
white polyester (for trim)

POINT!
The skirt has a natural flare. If you use interfacing on the back, you'll get an even more appropriate look for the character.

Mini-Pattern: KAITO (VOCALOID)

A great slim-fit jacket!

A jacket with a near-future design paired with pants for a sharp, tailored look to suit the VOCALOIDs' niichan perfectly.

Pattern Size (actual pattern): 15%
*the scans don't match this estimate. You will need to draft your own pattern or purchase a copy of the magazine and use those to enlarge. These images are for reference only.

Materials:
white twill 150cm x 140cm
blue twill 70cm x 50cm
brown twill 150cm x 70cm
orange polyester 35cm x 35cm
open zipper 30cm
conceal zipper 18cm

POINT!
The long pants should fit tightly, especially around the knees. From there, they flare out naturally. It's a good idea to git the costume with your shoes or boots on for the best fit.

POINT!
The long coat is also tailored and designed to create a slender body-line. Be sure to guage fit accurately, especially in the chest. Don't forget the chest pocket, either.

Mini-Pattern: Kagamine Len (VOCALOID)

Vitamin-Colored Accents!

A boyish pop-look in black and yellow! Len's two-toned black and white color scheme is cut here and there with strips of yellow for a young, powerful pop-costume!

Pattern Size (actual pattern): 15%
*the scans don't match this estimate. You will need to draft your own pattern or purchase a copy of the magazine and use those to enlarge. These images are for reference only.

Materials:
(jacket)
white twill 140cm x 130cm
black twill 140cm x 60cm
yellow polyester 90cm x 100cm
conceal zipper 25cm x 1
yellow sailor tape 0.6cm x 300cm
iron-on interfacing 130cm
yellow san rubber
non-stretch tape
yellow embroidery thread
(pants)
black twill 140cm x 140cm
yellow vinyl 90cm x 150cm
pocket fabric ("sureki") 90cm x 40cm
zipper 22cm x 1
rivets 0.6 diameter x 60
non-stretch tape

POINT!
The key to an accurate look on this costume is making it a little too big, for a baggy, boyish sillouette. If the chest and shoulders are a bit loose, you can achieve the illusion of being much smaller and slimmer than you are. The arm covers and leg covers are oversized too ~ so make them big to balance out the rest of the costume.

Mini-Pattern: Kagamine Rin (VOCALOID)

Cute active style <3

The little flash of bellybutton is adorable! Her cut-off sailor shirt and shorts in white and grey make for a really cute outfit.

Pattern Size (actual pattern): 15%
*the scans don't match this estimate. You will need to draft your own pattern or purchase a copy of the magazine and use those to enlarge. These images are for reference only.

Materials:
(shirt)
white urban twill 150cm x 70cm
dark grey urban twill 150cm x 55cm
yellow polyester deshin (for the ribbon) 60cm x 30cm
iron-on interfacing 90cm x 35cm
yellow sailor tape 0.4cm x 2.8cm
yellow lace 1cm x 1.8m
open zipper 22cm x 1
snaps x 5 sets
yellow iton-print sheet
yellow veneer
(pants)
dark grey urban twill 150cm x 90cm
iron-on interfacing 90cm x 90cm
gold rivets 0.8 cm x 6
zipper 20cm x 1
hook

POINT!
We recommend making the belt fit low around well-fitting shorts to better showcase a nice waistline.

POINT!
To show off the minimal sillouette of the sailor shirt, it's important to concentrate on volume in your accessories (robbons, arm-warmers and leg-warmers).

007 Express Contacts Guide

The following is not a translation so much as color-catalog and general aid to using 007 Contacts while living in Japan. The color swatches are from 007 Contacts' promotional mailings, but the text is my own.

http://www.007s-contact.com/

007 Contacts is an express delivery contact service catering primarily to Japanese fashionistas and cosplayers. It's strictly a domestic service, so I'm afraid those living overseas can't use them for contacts :/

All orders are processed extremely quickly. Average turnaround is under a week. Contacts are all shipped with free cases, contact solution, and more instructional and promotional material one could ever want. My only beef with their service is that the shipping fee is higher than it needs to be, presumeably in order to cover cost of their including quite a lot of heavy advertising and promotional materials along with something the size of a pez dispenser ^^;; In essence: you're paying extra for them to advertise to you.

Both prescription and non-prescription contacts are offered. Generally speaking, the quality of contacts is very high. Any defective or damaged goods can be exchanged without penalty or question.

Their website is a bit complicated and tough to navigate, so I've simplified the process of shopping there a bit by scanning the color guide and linking it to order pages for specific contacts.

Guide to False Lashes

Did you know that just by putting on some false lashes, you can change the size and shape that your eyes appear to be? Here we'll introduce some techniques that will help you decide when and how to use some of the trickiest makeup accessories out there to your advantage.

A huge change from a small makeup accessory!!

Quite a lot of Layers think that their own natural lashes are enough to pull off their costumes. Sometimes, they are! But false lashes can do so much more than add length and volume, they can also alter how your eyes appear to be titled, shaped and give the illusion of size. Here we've divided some useful techniques into 4 different common character types to introduce a collection of tips from our other readers to you. Why not give them a try?

Lashes or No Lashes?

YES
If your main objective is to take photos
-Reguardless of the character's gender, eyes can get lost in a sea of flashy clothes, props, backdrops and lights. Lashes will bring more emphasis to your eyes and make them appear much stronger and more defined on camera.
-If your own lashes are thin compared to your character's, you should use them.
-If your eyes are small, you can boost the size with lashes.
-If you want your eyes to be the focus of photos or intend to take a lot of close-ups, lashes can add extra pop and polish.

NO
If you're crossplaying for a masculine look.
-If you specialize in male characters, it's best to learn makeup techniques to manipulate the eyes without using false lashes.
-Young, sporty male characters look especially goony with long lashes.
-If you don't want your makeup to look flashy or heavy; or you want to bring focus away from your eyes, it's best to avoid false lashes.

MAYBE
Decide based on your character's image.
-Look at reference images and use them if their eyes appear to be stronger, more defined, or fuller-lashed than your own.
-Focus on eyeline for "cool" characters and lash for "cute" ones.
-Keep in mind the gender of the character.
-Most Layers we spoke with used false lashes often with female characters and were much more selective about using them with male characters.

Tips By Type

~Gorgeous~
-Use long, thick false lashes. If you want even more volume, don't rule out layering.
-Layering cheap lashes may get you the same effect (or even better) than one pair of expensive lashes. If you layer enough, you might not even need mascara.
-Try layering straight and cross-lash types for maximum fullness.
-Curl your lashes and apply mascara.
-Apply mascara and curl after application to incorporate your own lashes into the look.
-Try using layered straight and cross lashes on the top and cross lashes on the bottom. If you want to get creative, you can choose lashes with metallic accents or set rhinestones to compliment the character's image.
-Apply tone of volumizing mascara to your own natural lashes if you don't want to apply false ones.

~Cute~
-Use random, thin lashes.
-Put lots of mascara on your own lashes, then layer 2 sets of cross-lashes.
-If you're doing a male character, curl your lashes up and apply a ton of mascara. If you're going for a girl, do the same before applying false lashes with a distinct curl (try layering 2 sets for more volume).
-Without using much mascara, cut some lashes to frame only the outer part of your eyes. If you play with placement, you can get rounder eyes of a downturned eye look.
-Put some thick lashes above the orbit of your eye, then apply mascara to your lashes. Be sure to get the bottom with mascara too. This will make your eyes appear very wide and childlike.
-Use a volume-boosting mascara to get your own lashes up to snuff, then curl them with a heated eyelash curler.

~Cool~
-Use lashes lengths that are longer than your own eyes, it gives the illusion of a longer eyeline.
-Use just one pair of natural-looking lashes.
-Without applying lashes, use mascara to define the eye. If you use a curler, don't press too heavily.
-Apply false lashes without much curve as close to your own eyeline as possible. Apply lots of mascara and your eyes will appear narrower.
-Cut a long pair of normal lashes to be shorter and use them to define the shape of your eye without adding much volume.
-Apply lashes that seem to extend past your natural eyeline, especially on the bottom. Apply mascara and eye makeup with the aim of lengthening the shape of the eye over creating volume.
-If you have round eyes, use a spread type lash with plenty of mascara to disperse volume. Be careful not to apply them above your own eyeline or with much curve. Curl with care.

~Natural~
-Apply mascara lightly and use a lash comb to take clumps and volume off any applied lashes.
-Don't go overboard. Regular makeup will probably do.
-Use thin, single layer, random lashes if you use any at all.
-Don't overcurl your lashes. Pull them up just enough so as not to obscure your eyes in photos and apply mascara.
-Use short, thin lashes or just apply mascara to your own.
-Just curl some simple false lashes. You don't even need to bother with mascara.
-Mascara's enough. You don't need false lashes. If you're worried about making your eyes pop, concentrate on eyeliner and shadow.

Prop Tutorial: Megurine Luka's Chest Parts

Could this chest ornament be one of Luka's most mysterious charm points? Let's try making these brass-instrument inspired coild from scratch!!

Use thick gold rope as-is
The main material for the tutorial shown here is a vinyl-covered rope sold as most large craft stores. If you can't find the materials or materials in the color you want premade, it's also possible to create your own rope with some plush lining and fabric of your own choosing. Vinyl doesn't fray easily, so you can wear the piece without worrying that it will come apart during events or shoots.

You'll Need:

-enamel sheeting/material
-G10 glue
-Uretan Board (colorboard, thick lionboard, or thick craft foam will all do)
-spray paint (gold)
-superglue (transparent)
-kurumi buttons x3
-vinyl rope (gold)
-sautering iron (you can use a regular cutter knife if you're working with thinner foams)

Step 1 ~ Make the Box Base
Cut the uretan board and use G-bond to create a box like the one shown in the picture. Be careful, the glue dries very quickly.

Step 2 ~ Cover the Box With Enamel
Stick a layer of enamel material on the outside surface of the box you made in step 1. You're going to spray paint the piece later, so the color of the material isn't all that important.

Step 3 ~ Add the Kurumi Buttons
Apply plenty of transparent superglue to the back ridges of the kurumi buttons and attatch them to the box you made in steps 1 and 2. You want 3 evenly-spaced buttons in the end.

Step 4 ~ Spray Paint the Piece Gold
Spray gold spray paint over the entire surface of the completed box. Be sure to use spray paint only in a well-ventilated area.

Step 5 ~ Make Looped Shapes With the Vinyl Rope
Using transparent super glue, bend and secure the vinyl rope into the shapes shown. Be sure to leave a bit of extra length to connect the pieces to the main box.

Prop Tutorial: Megurine Luka's Chest Parts (part 2)

Step 6 ~ Open a Hole in the Box For the Rope
Trace the ends of your finished rope pieces onto the underside of the box and use the sautering iron to open the area up. The sautering iron is hot, so be careful not to burn yourself.
(if you're altering this tutorial for cardboard or craft foam, you can use a regular box cutter)

Step 7 ~ Insert the Rope Pieces In the Hole
Push the ends of the rope pieces through the holes. If the hole is a bit small, just squeeze the rope together a bit and stuff it in.

Step 8 ~ Glue the Rope
Turn the box over and glue the rope at the base from the inside. Make sure the hole is completely sealed.

Step 9 ~ Make a Square Piece with Rope
Using a bit of superglue on the inside of the corners, pinch the rope into the shape you want (90 degree angles) and hold in place until dry.

Step 10 ~ Secure the Square to the Rest of the Piece
Glue your square to the pieces of rope you've already installed. Be sure that the square is wide enough to extend past the base on both sides.

Step 11 ~ Make and Secure a Figure-8 Shape
Bend some rope into a figure-8 shape. Glue the ends to seal them and prevent fraying before gluing them to the rope you've already secured in each place that it crosses.

Finished!!
A perfect, sparkling, gold chest ornament

Winter Uniform
The skirts and pants for the winter uniform are basic uniform styles, but both have a vertical line motif and a well-tailored fit!!

Boys

The collar has a grey checkered lining. There are thin white lines along the sleeves and the pants.

Girls

The girls have long jackets with open pieces at the chest where white uniform shirts show through. The skirts are pleated with a vertical line pattern.

Patch

The outer jacket sleeves each have a monotone patch with just a bit of blue at the center.

Starry Sky Character References (part 2)

Summer Uniform
The summer uniform has no jacket and looks a lot cooler to wear!! Each of the main characters has their own accents to compliment their summer look, like vests and t-shirts.

Boys

The bottoms are the same for the summer and winter uniforms. The shirts have some distinctive seams, so be careful when cutting patterns and sewing.

Girls

The sleeves have an angular puff design. The skirts are grey check.

Patch

The summer shirt patches are the same design as the winter patches with the colors reversed and a yellow center. They're only worn on the left sleeve of the uniform shirts.

Accessory Check!!

The uniforms are differentiated both by style of wear and by different color ties for different class-years. 1st graders wear green ties, 2nd graders wear red and 3rd graders wear blue.

Belts

The gold belt buckles have a complex, specialized design.

Collar Pins

There are two stars on each of the two collar pins on every uniform collar.
