Question on wig cap; white wig and dark hair
Hello! I'm assembling my first cosplay, so I'm learning things as I go. I ordered a white Ivy wig from this site, but I think I should get a wig cap (it doesn't sound like one will come with the wig). I have very dark brown hair that's curly, a bit thick, and shoulder-length, although I may cut it to chin-length when it's time to wear the costume. I plan to tie the wig into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck (from what I've read it's easier to do low ponytails) and possibly trim the bangs, but I won't style it further.
Would a white wig cap be good for me to use? I've heard that it's best to match the wig color, but I don't know if it'd be a bad idea in this case because of the wig or because of my hair. If white isn't good, what color should I use? Is there a particular thickness or material I should look out for? Do I even need to be very worried about color when using an Ivy wig? It hasn't arrived yet, so I can't test for myself how much of my natural hair would show under it; hopefully someone else who used a light-colored Ivy wig would be able to help. I still think I should get some kind of cap anyway, if only to keep my hair out of the way. I just want to be extra sure of what to before I make my choice. Thank you for your help! |

Wig caps are primarily to keep the wig clean. Secondarily they can help hide your base hair colour. Even if the wig you've ordered is super, ridiculously, insanely thick, you still need a wig cap for the first reason if not the second. So, yes, you need a wig cap.
I would suggest either a white one, as it does help mute the colour of your hair under the wig, or a nude tone one. I personally prefer the open weave wig caps as they're easier to pin through(you will NEED to pin your wig on, it will slide), and last longer. However, if you can only find the ones made of nylon, similar to what you'd find in nylons you'd wear on your legs, those will work fine as well.

If you want to do this, you can buy a dark cap. It helps where there could be "bald spots" in the wig (where you can see your wig cap under it) so it looks more narutal. For example, with my Squall wig, I use a dark cap and you can't even tell it's a wig..This may not help in the case of needing to pin the wig though but just another friendly suggestion ^_^

Always use a wig cap that is the same (or as close to the same) color as your WIG, not your HAIR.
![]() So in this case, a white wig cap is best. You can probably find a white one at Sally's Beauty Supply or maybe even Wal-Mart.

Since I find that the coloured wig caps don't really block much of your natural hair colour when you stretch them, for my white wigs I like to sew a piece of white spandex into the inside of the wig.

Get a white wig cap. You can also use some small, flat clips to clip hair in place when the wig cap is on to make sure you don't get awkward flyaways (like in front of the ears).
I also prefer to shave the back of my neck at the beginning of a con because I get the shorter, finer hair growing there. (Some people have this, some don't.) My hair's also dark brown and that stuff will end up peeking out over time, which is a problem if my wig is short, in a ponytail, and/or pale. So, I just get rid of it.

The wig came in today, so I got to test things out. It's not as heavy as I expected, but obviously walking around at home for a few minutes is different than walking around at a convention for a few hours. I might be able to use a nylon cap instead of a weave cap, but it'll definitely need to be anchored down no matter what.
I'll keep in mind trimming down problem areas of my hair. I don't have any bobby pins or flat clips at the moment, but a hairband and a French barrette showed some places that need to be dealt with, although I might be able to clip them down. My hair color does show through, so I'll have to try and get a white cap. There's a Sally's not too far from where I live, so I'll see if they have one. If not, I think I saw a decently-priced one I can order online. If I absolutely have to, though, can I use flesh color, or would that still be too dark? Sorry, I don't have a good camera on me, so I don't know if I can show any examples that would be helpful. But again, the priority is color, so if I get choices I'll use that as the deciding factor. Thank you for all the advice! I'm looking forward to completing the costume and getting to wear it! |
