Talking The Official C.L.A.M.P. Cosplay Hub

Welcome to the Official CLAMP Thread!!!

Before I get started, I want everyone to have an available source of info and help about Coscom from here. And more specifically here. Please follow the rules, be kind and courteous to everyone and have fun!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
Also, I'd like to mention The Legend of Zelda Cosplay Thread because the layout for our thread is based largly off that one. I like the clean-ness and easy access of it, so I kinda borrowed some of it for this one. Thanks Princess Zelda!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~

First I’d like to mention a few things about skill levels. I’ve found they’re really not all that important, as many people who’ve never even attempted cosplaying before can make amazing costumes the first time around, and those who’ve been cosplaying their whole lives sometimes are the worst. It all depends on your own preferences and abilities, but for simplicities sake, (as well as those picky cosplayers out there) I’m going to label the sites by either N=Novice, I=Intermediate, and A=Advanced.

Which leads to the skill levels: Novice, Journeyman, and Masters. Which is basically the same thing as above, but to be less biased I’ll use the other.

THESE ARE ONLY RECCOMENDATIONS! I am not saying you have to be at this skill level to attempt half the tutorials I put on here, it’s just to make things easier to navigate.

Here is a link to the official guidelines followed by cosplay judging as far as skill levels are concerned: http://www.costume.org/documents/fai...6-05-2006.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
Next I’d like you guys to have a few helpful “general” links at hand to help with just about anything and everything cosplay, whether it be info on cons, costuming, supplies or random cosplay hints and tips. The more specific links will be posted below.
http://www.sarcasm-hime.net/tipscosplay.html - Fun, helpful site from an experienced cosplayer. She has great tips and is an amazing cosplayer.
http://www.whatishcc.com/index.php - One of THE best all around help sites I’ve found.
http://gameist.com/articles/the-9-le...-cosplay-hell/ - The abridged version of Cosfu. XD Without all the mess of the evil cosplayers mocking you. Teaches you what NOT to do. Some might take offence to this though, so tread carefully.
http://www.acparadise.com/index.php - Pretty nice site for us American cosplayers looking for info on US cons and many, many pics of cosplays. Great for research.
http://www.cosplaysupplies.com/homepage.php - Similar to a very expensive ebay or cosworx. XD But helpful non-the-less.
http://www.tapplastics.com/index.php...17490845411728 - They have nearly everything you could ever need for a costume. But they are quite pricey in some areas.
http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=84955 – A fellow cosplayer on Coscom who’s been kind enough to provide tutorials for many props. There’s even a tutorial for Sakura’s staff!!
http://www.studiocreations.com/howto/index.html - This here site is a more professional, business grade site, but they have many helpful tutorials, including how to make latex body parts!
http://www.creativeartstore.com/ - This place looks like they have just about anything odd and strange, but very helpful!
http://www.amphigory.com/ - They have amazing wigs and a wide variety of products.
http://fx.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page - Not quite finished, but already provides a fair bit of helpful info in different areas of costuming.
http://www.animecons.com/ - Anime conventions Main Hub. One giant link to any and every con you can think of.
And as always there’s http://www.ebay.com/ as well as the real Cosfu and 4chan. The last two you generally want to avoid. -_-
Also, many sites provide catalogues for their products and half the time those are free! Order them, use them, they are your friend!
CONTACTS TIPS/TUTORIALS
http://www.9mmsfx.com/lenses.html
http://www.**BANNED URL**.com/index....=index&cPath=9
http://www.freshlookcontacts.com/
http://www.coastalcontacts.com/
Eye color for an anime character usually isn’t that big of a deal to most cosplayers—half the time the person cosplaying has the same color as that character! But, for all those perfectionists out there, these are a few good sites I dug up; just make sure you know all the specs on your eyes! NEVER get contacts without having your eyes checked first!
http://www.matrices.net/fursuiting.asp I/A
http://fibers.destinyslobster.com/Dyeing/dyeindex.htm N/I/A
Most links here just give you a great deal of help in finding just the right fabrics or pieces you’ll need for your costume, but a few of the others help when it comes to the finer details you’ll most likely be needing in them—especially as far as CLAMP characters are concerned.
The Mascot link takes you to a site where some advanced skill is needed in working with some projects, but for those of us who’d like to have a fluffy little Kero-chan flying around with us, this is your place.
FOAM/FIBERGLASS TIPS/TUTORIALS
http://amethyst-angel.com/armormaking.html N/I/A
http://www.entropyhouse.com/penwiper...helmsdeep.html N/I/A
http://www.jedielfqueen.com/elvenwar.../processes.htm N/I/A
http://www.ops.dti.ne.jp/~darkk/ A – The site is in Japanese, so unless you can read it, or you have a translator you’re out of luck.
http://fiberglassblades.com/Process.html I/A
http://www.paper-wings.org/tutorials...iberglass.html I/A
http://www.paper-wings.org/tutorials/armor/bondo.html N/I/A
http://www.jgreer.com/ I/A
Most of these sites are not recommended for Novices or anyone new to the cosplaying scene. Fiberglass is on a whole other level next to foam, clay and paper maché. But if you have the resources, skill and patience to use it, it is totally 100% worth it. Because whatever you make out of it, that baby will last you forever!
http://www.whatishcc.com/tutorials/polyesterresin.php N/I/A
http://www.whatishcc.com/tutorials/resincasting.php N/I/A
http://www.firemountaingems.com/
There is a mix of both jewelry making with beads, casting with resin, and clay working in here as well. All require some level of skill—or at least a ton of patience—but all are totally worth it in the end. Jewelry making does require some degree of skill, many find it very difficult to make even the simplest of designs, but it is very easy to pick up and fun to do too!
There are even plenty of stores in the neighborhood that will aid in this: Wal-Mart, Joann’s, Michaels, etc. Wal-Mart just sells the basics, but the other two have almost anything you could ever need if you were in a crunch and the associates working there are very helpful.
Clay-making is a skill all of its own and is a little bit more difficult. But if you liken it to something like playing with play-do when you were younger, you shouldn’t have much of a problem! Fimo and Sculpty are the most popular and in mosts opinion, the best to use. Both are extremely durable and Fimo turns almost rubbery after being cooked, which is very nice when your stuff takes a beating at cons.
MAKE-UP TIPS/TUTORIALS
http://stageandtheatermakeup.com/highlightslist.htm
Make-up is very difficult to use and apply properly at times—even for those who wear it all the time! Especially when it comes the mass amounts that many cosplays require. Don’t be afraid to experiment with it and have fun though! Many make-ups can be mixed and combined to create better colors or effects. Especially for those who are using full-body paint. Ben Nye is personally my favorite, but Kryolan make-up is very good also, and mixing the two together gives you very good results most of the time.
If you just need make-up for general use, such as eye shadow/mascara cover-up, etc. Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, Target and any other such place, sells great products at fairly decent prices. Make-up removers are also sold there, as well as on the sites provided. Sephora and M.A.C. are also excellent places to buy make-up from but that’s racking it up in the price ranges—something no cosplayer needs.
Another part of the make-up scheme most cosplayers ignore is the eyebrows. A lot of times that’s not too important to people, but if you have a blonde character and you have black eyebrows, it looks a little funky. So I’ve found a product that works GREAT for fixing that and makes the color change in your eyebrows look natural! It’s called Paradise Makeup. It’s applied with water and a brush and you’re good to go!
Some good products I recommend for eye/face make-up: Loreal, Revlon, Flirt, Maybelline… to name a few. Make-up removers: Neutrogena, baby wipes, and I’ve been told spirit gum remover works well on hard to remove make-up as well.
METAL WORKING TIPS/TUTORIALS
http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns/ A
http://www.armourarchive.org/essays/ I/A
This is by far the most difficult type of project any one—not just cosplayers—will ever have to undertake. It requires a great deal of skill, knowledge in the area, money—lots and lots of money—and time.
But if you ever find yourself suddenly needing a full set of Orc armor to take on the hoards of evil Dark Lords… here’s your sites.
http://www.ehow.com/how_16353_make-paper-fan.html N/I/A
http://www.underworks.com/
http://trimsplus.com/
These are a few random sites that don’t really belong with anything else, but can help in more ways than you could ever imagine… especially as far as a CLAMP character is concerned. They’re great for little extras needed on a cosplay or small props you might want to have to add that extra special touch to your costume.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~

PRE-MADE COSTUMES

http://www.qqcosplay.com/Costume.htm
https://www.mooncostumes.com/pcat/Co...YkYAodzTRf Og

If someone is truly desperate and has some change to spare, these are the places to go. But just remember, when commissioning a costume from someone, you must always give that person the credit for their work! Especially if you’re going to be entering any contests.

PROSTHETICS TIPS/TUTORIALS

http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Article/Ears.htm I/A
http://www.scendan.com/lotrears.html I/A

Once again, another difficult project to undertake and thankfully not needed most of the time as far as CLAMP is concerned. It is also another part of cosplaying that’s generally overlooked, especially if the only addition that is needed are ears, as our wigs or hair cover them up most of the time.

If you do undertake this kind of project, it is very time consuming and tedious. So be sure you really, really want to do this and are ready to make the commitment.

REFERENCES

This is just an area to go to for mass searches of great reference pictures of your characters, if you don’t want to fish through google all day long.

WEAPONS/ARMOR TIPS/TUTORIALS

http://ffcosplay.free.fr/rec_fucile_irvine.htm N/I/A
http://www.cosplaysupplies.com/store.php?s=M4UZ N/I/A

Yeah I know the gun is for Irvine (Final Fantasy VIII) but who knows! Someone might be able to use it on here someday!

I also placed the link for wonderflex on here, mostly because this is what it’s used for—even though it’s a great all around item to use for all props. But a word of warning, despite the skill rating, it takes immense amounts of patience. It constantly has to be re-heated and molded to the object your building and requires a lot of time and patience… and is also not very cheep.

But if you can afford this amazing stuff, it’s well worth it in the end and can make whatever project you use it on last for many, many cons!

WIG TIPS/TUTORIALS

http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=57484 N/I/A

Wig making is very hard—actually wearing a wig with your costumes seems to be even harder. Wigs are one of the most important parts of a costume. It’s not wise to ignore that piece just because it might be pricey or difficult to manage. You can make or break a costume with or without a wig.

They’re worth the time and money and often times are just as easy to style as your own hair. You just have to have patience.

A good investment, if you plan on using wigs—keeping them—and want to keep them in good shape, are head-forms. Styrofoam heads are the best; you can pin the wigs to them and they can take a bit of a beating and are very light—something which makes travelling much easier. They’re also dirt cheep, so affording multiples is easy. I’ve only managed to find them at Sally’s—which is a salon products store, but I’m sure any place that sells salon products would carry them.

WING TIPS/TUTORIALS

http://www.whatishcc.com/tutorials/angelwings.php I/A
http://www.paper-wings.org/tutorials/wings/wings.html N/I/A
http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=23650 I/A
http://rainbowfeatherco.com/index.html

Once again, another project not worth attempting unless you have a whole lot of patience or experience in the field. Most just opt for buying pre-made wings, which is okay in most cases, but if you want something a little different or larger than what is usually sold, ya gotta make ‘em yerself.

The tutorials from HCC are by far the best I’ve ever come across and are highly recommended to use. The tutorials are very simple and easy to follow as well, the only reason why they have a higher skill rating is mostly because of the time and money that has to go into making something of the sort. But it is well, well worth it in the end.

And also, let's try to keep the over-abundance of "CLAMP Rules!" or "I like CLAMP because..." comments to a minimum.

This thread is set up to aid those who need help with a costume, not just for general chit chat.

We all know how amazing CLAMP is, thats why this is here. And we wanna keep this thread that way.

Thanks!

Wow, I certainly was not aware of this thread O.O

Major CLAMP-whore here. Currently I cosplay Fai, but I'm going to be working on Yuuko and possibly Hokuto this year. I have a feeling this thread will be useful! Thanks for posting this!

Well I'm happy somebody finally found it! XD And good luck on yer costumes!

I actually a quick question too, for anyone that's good enough at finding stuff on the net, because I have a serious lack of patience for that crap.

I'm looking for a specific panel/s from Tsubasa for Kurogane chasing Fai in their "chibi" forms. Fai has his arms thrown back and he's of course laughing and he kind of reminds me of a noodle. XP I'm sure there are a few panels like this in the comic, but it's been a really long time since I read it and I can't remember where exactly I saw them at. -_-

If anyone can help with this it would be great!

Glad I did! And thank you, I think I will need it...

:]
Yes, there are quite a few panels like that, but the ones I always remember are during the Outo arc. There is a small one on this page-

I already posted this question on the Tsubasa/Holic thread but maybe someone will be able to help me here as well! I'm trying to decide on a foundation to get for Yuuko. I'm semi-pale to begin with but I want to make it just that bit lighter without making it cheesy vampire halloween costume white. I plan on using Ben Nye foundation, this is the color chart-

Any suggestions?

I already posted this question on the Tsubasa/Holic thread but maybe someone will be able to help me here as well! I'm trying to decide on a foundation to get for Yuuko. I'm semi-pale to begin with but I want to make it just that bit lighter without making it cheesy vampire halloween costume white. I plan on using Ben Nye foundation, this is the color chart-

Any suggestions?
LOL yay! thats one of them! XD The one I remeber had them more defined, but this will help for now--thanks!

And as for the make-up, if your skin is already pretty pale, you might just wanna go with a foundation that you can get at any store, that's one shade lighter than what your skin is and use a foam pad to apply it then a brush to smooth it out and make it even so you're face has that "ethreal" look to it.

But if you really wanna use Ben Nye make up, I'd probably go with the Light Ivory, Geisha or Porcelain. Those are the lightest but still have color. You gotta remember to be real careful when applying make-up to your face though, since that place has the most wrinkles on your whole body (and is the most visible)--especially since it's skin colored make-up and not a wild color.

Or another option would be to use both Ben Nye and a powder foundation over that. That would actually be the best to go with... If you apply whatever color you wanna go with as the liquid/cake foundation from Ben Nye and then find a powder thats pretty close to that and dust it over your face with a brush afterwards it should help with cracking and obvious make-up problems that come up with caked on make-up.

Eh.... that was long-winded -_- Sorry, hopefully that helped somehow. >.<

Haha, your welcome :]

I was going to use Ben Nye because I live in Florida and make-up tends to sweat off quite easily- and sweaty melting Yuuko is so out of character XD Anyone know of any sweat proof concealing methods? If I do use Ben Nye I'm thinking light ivory or geisha will look best considering the rest of my skin. I'm also liking the powder suggestion, thanks for that!
