Transporting Cosplay Items?

I'm not sure where this question should go, but I didn't think it would hurt to put it here!

Anyway, I'm going to be cosplaying as Marshall Lee from Adventure Time at Anime Expo this year and some things came to mind. I'm originally planned to have his axe guitar made but since I'm taking a plane from the Bay Area in California to LA, but how would I transport the prop? Should I ship it ahead of time or put it in pieces and put it together down in LA?

Also, can PAX body paint be taken on planes? It has paint in it and the airline I'm taking doesn't allow paint to in the luggage so I'm not entirely sure.

This should really be moved to an on-topic fourm, but your best bet is getting one of those hard plastic suitcases so nothing gets squished and assembling it there. I've never shipped items to cons but I imagine it would be more of a hassle.

Maybe make it so the axe is one piece and the handle is two, wrap everything in ALL the bubble wrap and assemble at the con?
