Oh, I remembered one BIG tip I think is pretty important.
When you're at a con, DON'T DO ANYTHING YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO END UP ON THE INTERNET!
At cons chances are that you will be surrounded by people with cameras and video cameras and they can catch you in a weird moment. And it takes no time at all for them to upload it to youtube, myspace, facebook, etc. Now I'm not saying that you need to be paranoid about people with cameras, just be smart. Before you do something you're not sure of, think to yourself "Would I mind my friends/parents/random interent people seeing this?"
It will most likely save you from many odd situations ^_^

I'm going to my first anime convent in the summer-ish. I'm cosplaying Lavi from D. Grey-Man. I'm not sure how popular he is though. I'm kinda afraid of random people running up to me and my friend...she's cosplaying as Yuu Kanda from D. Grey-Man.
I wouldn't mind pictures ^^ I love pictures. But glomping? and random huggin' without asking? I tend to snap at people easily if they do something I don't like. But I don't want to scare someone or hurt their feelings. So what could i say if someone randomly hugged me and I didn't want them to? and my friend isn't too keen on hugging either but, she doesn't like pictures.
Oh yea! and what about powder make-up? is it just as good as liquidy stuff? or should I just find something else? (I have a really ugly scar under my left eye that I like to try and hide when i cosplay...but I'm not sure what to use) I've heard people argue over it so I'm not sure...and I don't want my scar to ruin my cosplay.
Oh yea! and how many times should you take a shower? like in the morning and just before bed? or just in the morning or what? (like at a con, if your staying in a hotel and such)
Oh yea! (know I really gotta stop saying this) what kind of bag would suit our characters? i know a purse is a givin no...
and what about going to a convention alone? I mean I can easily walk up to people and be all "hey! whats up?!? I love your cosplay!" but would that be a little too creepy to people? I mean, I'm sure i'll see some anime characters I like but really...would it be creepy?
Oh yea! and are yaoi pictures a "no-no" at conventions? Because i mean if i found an Allen willing to kiss me I'd totally do it xD
OH yea! and if you know of any conventions in Alberta, Canada (anywhere in Alberta is fine really...) Could you please tell me?
I at least wanna get to 3 conventions before i'm 19 yrs old XP

Firstly, in the future it'll make your posts easier to read if you throw a couple line breaks in there, and perhaps stagger your questions over a few posts or something. It's just a LOT of info to take in at once! I'll try to go through and answer as much as I can, though.

In general, while it is prevalent, unwarranted glomping is universally frowned upon by everyone except those who do it. Most people have learned to stop and ask the person before they just tackle willy-nilly, but if you're unlucky and get randomly attacked, just calmly but firmly tell them that is not appreciated or desired, to please not do it again, and in the future ask a cosplayer before you express your fondness for the character. People can get hurt by sudden attack-"hugs" and the glomper needs to understand that and learn to restrain themselves. The picture situation is kind of similar, most people will ask before they whip out their camera and start snapping away, but if someone jumps the gun and your friend doesn't want her pic taken, just tell the photographer to cool it.

As for the makeup, there is a subforum dedicated to that specifically if you want to head over there and ask them, but in general a liquid will give you better coverage than a pressed or loose powder. I don't know how severe your scar is, but if it's significantly dark or something, they do make special makeup such as DermaBlend that is meant to cover up significant spots or tattoos. That aside, so long as you put forth the effort in the other areas of your cosplay, no one is going to lynch you if your scar shows a little, because it's not something you can change and probably won't detract from your costume.

...Seriously? You want to be told when to shower? XD I'd think you'd have it figured out by now, but in general you're gonna wanna shower every day, and any time you get especially gross (such as going to a dance). Since you'll be wearing makeup and possibly a wig in conjunction with long black clothing, you'll want to definitely shower at least once a day to clean all the junk off and to keep yourself fresh. Con funk is a nasty thing.

As for bags, some people find clever ways of incorporating a bag into their costume, such as a carrot purse for a Ryo-Ohki costume, but many characters don't really have that option. In those cases, just carry around your normal bag, but set it aside (BUT WITHIN YOUR EYELINE!! Beware of thieves.) so it's out of the frame for pictures. Similarly, clip your con badge to said bag or someone not easily visible, so your costume doesn't have this big incongruous con badge stuck in the middle of it, you know? It's a simple thing that helps ensure nice pictures after the fact. For that matter, make sure and get some of your own pictures, don't just rely on other people taking and posting their pics. I've had cons go by and had my picture taken dozens of times, but never found those pics online after the fact.

Most cosplayers won't mind if you go up to them and strike up a conversation about their costume, or if you're both from the same series or something, just use good judgment. If they're busy or talking to someone else, leave them be for now. Try gatherings! There'll almost definitely be a D. Grayman gathering at whatever con you go to because of its popularity, and that's a great way to get great pics and meet new people who will be prepared to interact with an unknown friendly person.

As for the shounen-ai pics, no one is going to start a riot if you and some willing fellow cosplayer take some (tasteful!! No pretend BJs, please) pretend shippy/lovey shots, but to be frank, it's severely overdone. It may still get hoots from the preteen girl crowd, but is that really the sort of group you should strive to impress? Take it from the Masquerade skit crowd; there will probably be some "yaoi" skit, but all it's going to get is sighs and aggravation from the majority, because it's all so played-out by now.

And I know nothing personally in regards to the Canadian con scene, but check out animecons.com.

...phew.

I'm not a first-time con goer, but I am a total n00b when it comes to cosplay XD
But I have a really lame question; is it I guess ok..to go as a characater from a video game? :l
I have a con (Nekocon) on friday, and I've had my Smiley mask (Smiley's from Manhunt for 360/PS2) ready for like a year, and I've always been scared/nervous to do it.

Help?

Thanks alot Bandersnatch. I'll keep the post thing in mind. I just tend to shove all my questions into one post. Old habit XP.

KandiAddiction::: It's fine to go as someone from a game (I was gunna go as a army dude from Halo, but i changed my mind). Don't worry about what others think. If you think your cosplay is good thats all that matters. As long as you have fun ^^' Fun is the key to pretty much everything.

Hey, I know you mentioned something about staying hydrated at conventions and thats really important, and I can't stress enough how important it is to bring YOUR OWN water bottles/pepsi bottles or whatever to the convention your attending. The reason being - I attended Naru2u this past October and the staff thought it would be a good idea to put pitchers of water for the con-goers. This ended up.... poorly. Somebody ended up slipping ecstacy into a few pitchers of water and a few con members and staff members collapsed from it, unkowing it had been laced, thankfully, noone suffered any permanent damage.

Well, I figured most people are wise enough to not drink someone else's water...
