So why do YOU crossplay?
Answer by post/poll/both. Can choose more than one.

Okay, not sure why the poll results are spreading like that.

Not sure, though I see plenty of thread polls [here only] that do that. I'm not sure why...

A lot of those reasons are mine. Most of the male characters appeal more to me, and since a lot of anime guys tend to be guess-the-gender in general, my semi-androgynous appearance helps. It makes my mother worried that her only daughter dresses up as a boy... She has good reason to be.
Too bad I'm so short.

I have a lot of reasons for doing it, but my primary explanation is that I was a gender illusionist for a while, but there wasn't a lot of demand for the characters I wanted to portray (which are mainly anime, cartoon, and game characters). Most performers in that field prefer Cher, Madonna, Lady Gaga. All of which are perfectly fine, but it just doesn't pique my interest quite like cosplay does.
That and I consider myself bigender. I'm completely comfortable in one gender or the other, and crossplay has always been a niche group in the cosplay scene. So I figured it'd be fun to try to expand it more, really get the word out that crossplaying is a fun hobby that requires a lot of skill.

I am a MtF transgender. Female is how I feel I was always meant to be. I am not sure if I pull it off that well yet but I am slowly going back to female again for the third and final time. The last time bigots scared me back into the closet for another 5 miserable years and I can no longer put up with it. I have to be me or not be.

I have a few reasons. The biggest reason is that I just cosplay characters I love, men or women and most of the outs and characters I like just happen to be males. I also have a bit more masculine look and personality (partly due to hormonal imbalance and all that), so it is easier for me to pull off and feel more comfortable as lot of females I like have skimpy outfits and don't feel I could pull them off very well.

How true and sad. All non-cisgendered people go through hell, but from what you've said, you got a double dose of it. I couldn't imagine going through that, not at all. It might be off topic, but I really hope everything works out for you.

For as long as I remember, I've been doing more crossplay of male characters (I am female). I am not against of female characters but I feel more comfortable when I cosplay as the opposite gender. I'm not very girly. I am very tomboyish and I have always felt more comfortable where I wear boyish clothing also since my personality drifts off to the boyish side. Their are times where I do cosplay as a female character but not often.

I'm FtM transgender so I can't even see myself as cosplaying female characters.. it would feel so wrong and I would feel terribly uncomfortable. But I can't say that I'm crossplaying either, I am cosplaying my gender. If I dressed as a female that would be crossplaying in my eyes because I am not female... never was.

I'm bigender, so it's really not that important to me at least which character I choose to cosplay. Though I seem to gravitate more towards male characters, since I just find them more comfortable to cosplay in, even though I'm not the least bit manly (I've passed a few times, but I wished I looked more androgynous than anything else). I've danced around cosplaying female characters, and at some point placed them on my "to do list" but somehow, someway they always get bumped off by a male character from that same series.
