Cosplay construction lessons learned

What did you learn while wearing your cosplay this weekend?

Lesson one: Hoola hoop frames are great, except when the frame expands due to heat and causes the ends to slip out of the joints....

Lesson two: Duct tape saves the day again....

For next year when I bring it back, either duct tape the joints or look into another material for the upper frame. Put in a fan system because it got hot in there...

I learned to test all parts of my costume before I leave. I didn't bring a headband with me, thinking bobby pins would be enough to hold ears in place on my wig. Uh... not so much. Ears are heavy! Which I would have realized, if I had tried putting the ears on before I came to AN... *cosplayfail*

Use only 1 layer intead of 2 to make a collar based out of plastic canvas. I spent the day asking random people to pull tight in my collar on my Regina dress ever 1-2 hours as it wanted to pop out all the time. lol

You can style an updo wig with a 50+ bobby pins and hairspray in 4 hours.

Don't smash mascot heads on to your head all day. I have a slight bruce on the middle of my forehead. >_<

Don't rave in a lightsuit unless you want breakage (fortunately only my leg circuit broke).
And, worbla will lose its shape when you're wearing a chestplate of it under pleather with nowhere for your body heat to go while you also need to breathe for a few hours... I went from a nicely shaped chestplate to "wait, what happened to the armour?"

The raving breakage or the worbla re-activated by body heat?

Probably the most time consuming this year was doing the test runs for costumes IN the hotel room Saturday morning, resulting in a face down on the bed screaming/crying/laughing fit.

Then attempting to not become a nudist with everything falling off my body anyways ;_;

The re-activated by body heat. Your not suppose to leave thermal plastics in a hot car for the same reason as your projects will warp.

Yeah, I just didn't think my own body heat would misshape it that easily (at least it can be fixed pretty easily, it's just a two-person job and not fun in summer because I need a hairdryer aimed at my chest). Especially since it wasn't even very hot. How the heck do cosplayers with full armour-suits keep it in shape if it re-softens that easily?

How many layers do you have one it? just 2 or 3? The more layers the better it hold it shape, if you also add a wire to the edge it helps.

Just one, as it was being used as an extra bit of stiffening/shaping around the chest of my Quorra armour so it would hold its shape a bit better than with the pleather alone (it didn't make a lot of difference, but it helped a bit). I didn't know multiple layers of it was possible when shaping into essentially bra cups. If I fix it and it loses shape again, I may go that route.

i think i'm going to change my half hoop skirt from being made from hanger wire to just cutting a holahoop, the wire just kept bending out of shape and at that point it was no longer easy to just bend it back.

2 layers are the minimum most cosplayers do which might explain why it was failing structurally as 1 layer by it's self is pretty week and it's the same with wonderflex.

I usually shape my top layer then laminate a second and third layer behind it.

Make sure to use a glue that is prepared for the adjusting elements. Hot and Cold = Expansions and Contraction. I had to last minute repair some armour because some heavy duty spots were not glued with the same weather-adapting glue as others. Ugh.
