My Neighbour Totoro

Ok, I did something foolish and told people I would be making a Mascot Totoro costume for a con in May O_O Now I'm getting worried about making the huge thing!

I plan to do it not life-size, but larger than human sized maybe 7-8'? Hopefully I'll make his huge grin out of mesh that I can see through or if I make his body large enough I can look through the patterns on his chest?

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas as to...well, where to start? The inner frame I mean. I'm considering chicken-wire stuff, but I think the foam and fur might weigh it down too much and it'll implode.

Any ideas?

This is a long shot but I found these YouTube Video clips where people
DID a Totoro as well as a Lil Totoro and a Mini Totoro. Have a look at it
when you can and maybe it will give you some idea what you can do or use.
