As if the film didn't confuse me enough...

I just bought the first volume of the Akira manga, and being so used to the film, I wasn't really following...I got it now tho... at least now I know that I wont know exactly what to expect in the other volumes and just get bored

Personally, I think the manga is much better than the anime. But, of course I favor manga over anime most of the ttime anyhow....

Right now, I only have volume 1 of the manga like you mentioned, and have seen the movie, and i have to say I loved the manga so, so, so much more than the movie, just because they had more time for character development.

I'm trying to save up for the other volumes, but they are so insanely expensive, and lately I've needed to buy other things...*costume materials*

The manga is in a way much more complicated, but in another hand the story makes a lot more sense, as a whole.
The movie kept aside a lot of character development. I personnaly like Lady Miyako a lot and her cameo in the movie doesn't give the character justice. And I simply love Tetsuo in the manga ^^
I'd say the anime did a great job in adapting the themes and ambiance of the manga, and the story was complicated enough for a 2 hours long movie. Visually speaking, it's beautiful, and the soundtrack is simply one of the best movie soundtracks ever. So I like the movie a lot too, even if the story of the manga is better. Just like Miyazaki's Nausicša ^^
