FMA edward/ alphonse red jacket qustion

OK this is for all those Edward/ Alphonse cosplayers out there. I'm making an alphonse costume (to go with my friends Edward costume). I have the red jacket and the shirt, and the pants.. those were the easy part. The hard part is the symbol on the back of the jacket. I'm having a heck of a time getting the sizing right. Any suggestions? If you've made this jacket what did you use for a pattern for the symbol to get it to look right, what kind of fabric did you use?

Hrm, well I've never done it, but I'd probably just draw it on a piece of paper and match it to the jacket and just draw until I thought it looked reasonably proportional. Then I wouldn't use fabric to make the symbol. I'd buy a sheet of that iron on smooth stuff(Forgive me, I don't know the name of it. It's what they usually use to stick names and such on the back of shirts, jerseys, etc.) and draw the symbol on there and iron it to the back of the jacket.

I used tracing paper to draw the symbol, chalk to transfer it, and black acrylic paint for mine

First of all: zomg Vic signed it!!! xD

Second: I'm making an Al jacket, and as far as I can tell, the symbol starts a little above inbetween the shoulder blades and goes down to mid back/a little above mid backish. It will be covered by part of the hood.
As for getting it on, I'm taking the advice a Bleach cosplayer once gave me about how he got his black... ovaly things on his costume.
BLACK. TAPE. Yes. He carefully folded and shaped black tape into the right form and then stuck it on, then reinforced it by sewing over it. It looked AMAZING. And if you mess up, you can always just rip it off!

I would use a mock up of the jacket and draw on it with marker unti it's right, then cut up the mock up for a pattern, but that only works if you are a mock up nazi like me and do a test run of everythng. I would used cardboard to get the size right, then use it as a pattern on any non strechy black fabric, then I would use thin interfacing to stifen it abit (this could be ommited depending on ow flowy you wanted the jacket to be), then I would use wonder under or some other form of fabric sticking device to stick it on. For the last step I would aplique around the edges with a sewing machine on a satin stich to give it a nice finished look, but not everyone likes the aplique idea. i used this method for the designs on Jin's kimono and Mugen's shirt from Samurai Champloo, and it worked great.
