Choosing Clothing

Hello,
So, I'm a female, and I was wondering, when you crossplay, do you have to wear the other gender's clothing? Is it more helpful to wear the other gender's clothing? Or can I just wear female clothing but in certain styles? Thanks, hope this makes sense :/

Meaning is it help to wear clothing made for the other gender, like, get a mens size medium instead of womens? If so yes, it does help. Female clothing is designed to flatter and accentuate a female form, and mens does the same for a male figure.

It depends on what you want to do.

If you get "girl clothing", yes it will most likely be obvious that it's girl clothing. You might not notice it fully if you're not used to looking for differences - but there will almost certainly be a huge difference.

There are some types of clothing with a more "unisex" cut - but you have to take it case by case.

For instance, if you want to do a crossplay as a boy and look like a boy and that boy wears a suit jacket - a women's suit jacket is going to look totally and 100% "female" and you won't "look like a boy". It will be obvious even to people who don't know what to look for in the jacket.

People are exposed to gendered clothing every day of their lives. Even if they couldn't write you a list of the differences or "put their finger on it" they can still tell.

If you just want to do a costume of a certain character and you don't mind doing a "girl version" of them or if you don't care if you "pass" or look like a boy then it wouldn't be a big deal to wear "girl clothes".

It depends on what you really want to do.

What styles of men's clothing would I have to buy? Like pants and whatever, and how do you convert the women's sizes to men's clothing sizes?

It'd help to know what you're planning on crossplaying so people can make suggestions.

You buy clothing that would be appropriate for whatever you want to cosplay - that is, if the clothing is available in stores and isn't something you would have to sew or commission.

There is no "conversion" involved - just go by measurements listed for the sizes provided by the store or if you're in a physical store try things on. Sizes aren't standard - if you wear women's clothing I'm sure you know that you might be a certain size in one brand and a different size in another - so there is no way to "covert" since there is no standard - even men's clothing is variable and subject to "vanity sizing".
