I'm wanting to invite my friend to attend an anime con with me, however, she's paralyzed from the waist down, but even so, I know she would want to cosplay something, but she'd only do it if it were a wheelchaired character.

Yeah, she's picky like that.

I have thought about it, but I can't think of any over the top of my head. She's not really into the crossplay thing, so pretty much what I'm looking for suggestions of, is a female anime/manga character in a wheelchair.

I would say use the wheelchair as a chance to make a character that people can't normally make because the costume is too restricting on the feet. I've seen someone do a mermaid with a Count D from Petshop of Horrors and she could do the tail because she was in a wheelchair. So I'd say try to find something with a tail, it'd be the most different. Or of course there's Rufus from FF7 hehe.

The video game Phantom Brave has a girl in a wheelchair. Her name is Castile. She's brown haired with a pink dress, pretty easy costume. Some of the images have her holding a Putty, which would make a fun plush prop.

It's not anime/manga but Oracle from the Birds of Prey comic. She used to be Batgirl. Her clothes are also pretty much just normal clothes. Wearing a headset and having girls with you dressed as Huntress and/or Black Canary is what's going to make it recognizable.

Oh, and back to anime/manga there's Shuko from Angelic Layer. I think the best accessory one could have for that would be to have an Athena doll.

And off into musicals/literature, there's Nessa Rose from Wicked. Pictures from the musical shouldn't be too hard to find.

I'm pretty sure that the anime version of Integra Hellsing ended up in a wheelchair at some point.

Hinoto from X would be passable, as she's unable to walk. You could get a Kamui to wheel or around. Or it would be amusing to have a Kanoe do it. ^_^

Also, injured Rei from Evangelion. I saw it done at Animazement one year by a girl with a broken leg.

As others suggested, FFVII: AC Rufus is always recognizeable.

Mashiro Kazahana from My-Hime is at times portrayed to be in a wheelchair,
but does stand sometimes aswell. She is often seen with her maid Fumi Himeno.

Not Anime, but in the Drama 1 litre of tears the main character Aya Ikeuchi is in a wheelchair for part of the series. Though, I'm not sure what you could do to make it recognizable. Maybe if you did her sailor style uniform?

Subaru from .hack//SIGN is in a wheelchair. More specifically, the person who plays the Subaru character in The World. She could cosplay the character avatar, to be recognized.

She could always do Mariko from Elfen Lied. Not only is she adorable but she is also creepy as all hell lol. I'd love to cosplay her!

I've also seen people use their wheel chairs to make cars around them, so perhaps if there's any female drivers from Speed Racer (Trixie?) or Initial D?
