Dance-offs and sing-offs are overkill. Same with the Avenue Q songs. Well, two of the Avenue Q songs. "If You Were Gay" and "Internet is for Porn". That's my opinion. Please don't snap at it.

I realize that there are some well-done dance/sing-offs, but they are just getting to be too much. But, of course, I've never actually been to a convention. What I learn comes from the internet. This site and youtube.
i was wondering when tenimyu would get introduced into this

the problem is (and ive watched afew of the tenimyu usa "skits") is that most of them don't put full effort into it and their movements are BIG enough to be seen off the stage, and yes that is a BIG problem with lip synching. you have to make it BIG ..
problem with making your own skit is that if you haven't watched the musicals (and i believe that would be very few people attenting) you won't get the humor. i personally would love to do one of the songs from rikkaimyu but yeah.

thats my thought.

It could be either. I have no problem with musical skits, it's just that there aren't many folks that put the effort into them to pull them off in a unique and entertaining way.

I actully agree with Tegan. Skits can be overdone, but it doesn't matter how many times something is done, if you can put your own spin on it and put a lot of time and effort into it, and make it good, it can be enjoyable even if it's been overdone. It just has to be good.

That doesn't mean that it's not already overdone.. but lol.

This is what I think:

Musicals in general- I'm all for it, whether it's from a broadway show or a TV theme song. I'm planning a few of these myself because they're easiest and I'm terrible with playwright. Of coarse, some songs are WAY overdone.. if it's a good skit or not, most people lose interest in watching them because of the 'AUGH, not this again!!' thought. I think my favorite musical was in the Wasabi Animusical or something like that with Lupin III in 'One Jump'. It was a song people never used in skits but everyone knew, applied perfectly, and was carried out phenomenaly(Geez, I can't spell). Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEP6Sh8GL1M

Lip synching- Doesn't bother me in the least. There's always a way to make it work. It's also a way to not have to ACTUALLY sing, and why else would you choose the song if you were going to rewrite it? Well, maybe a couple of lines, but those don't hurt too bad. Usually it's the concept in itself people laugh at with a few well placed jokes or some emotion. At the same time, you have to MOVE right. If you do it right, most won't notice. If you do it WRONG, everybody'll notice. Overacting = Laughs.

300 Parodies: I personally think these are funny. If I see 2104917 with the SAME joke, I'll get ancy and hate it, but some have been pretty good. I saw an Ouran 300 skit where it was supposed to be the theme for their in-club cosplay. It was pretty impressive. The jokes had the crowd roaring, and the way Tamaki moved made me giggle profusely.

Avenue Q: They weren't that funny to begin with. I usually see them with people doing NOTHING and living off of the initial idea of who is singing to who. It's BORING. Of course, with some creative-ness, a group can make one hell of a show.

Dance offs- Never impressive. It kills shows. Sorry.

Fanservice- This is for the fangirls. They'll yell and scream horribly. For example, I'd LOSE A LUNG over screaming at clever twincest instances. If they're not impressive, however, I just blink. I'm a fangirl, but not the kind that'll settle for anything. I'm generally a picky person to begin with.

Naruto- Stop doing the NaruSasu. It's not cool. I think they need to use Neji more [[Can you tell he's my fav?]] and some other side characters. Everybody cosplays the same person. I'd like some Naruto skits if they weren't the SAME THING ONE AFTER ANOTHER. You think you're imaginitive... but you're really not. It's subconcious that you just want to fit in and please the crowd a lot of the time.

Mainstream walk-ons: Examples are Naruto saying Believe it, Ed Elric having a hissy fit about being short or milk, Haruhi groaning and telling Tama/Hika/Kao she hates 'em, DDR/Guitar Hero pretending to be in the game, ect. It's all the same. If you're Ed Elric or Naruto, make a REAL skit. Subtle jokes are better. If you're Haruhi, make implications and don't make the scene revolve around 'GOD I HAET U GAIZ LOL'. If you're a DDR/Guitar Hero character... Don't do a skit. Haha~ Unless you're really playing an instrument.

Contest Skits: I'M BETTER THAN U! Augh!! GTFO PLZ! These are my pet peeve. Back to DDR and Guitar Hero, they could just say:
"JOHNNY, I'm better at guitar!!"
"No wai, I'z so much better, Pandora!"
"GUITAR OFF!"
Unclever.
"BABY LON, I DANCE ON STANDARD"
"WELL.... I DANCE ON HARD!"
"NO WAI!"
"YUZ WAI!"
"SHOW ME!"
No.

Ahhhhhhhh... I'd love just once to see Sasuke come to Itachi with a curly moustache and say "Hello, my name is Uchiha Sasuke. You killed my father. Prepare to die!"

Or the OHSHC making a rennaisance cosplay day and Tamaki saying that in a cheesy tone to Haruhi, just as a side joke. I'd lol my face off.

- Haruhi dance
- 300 skits
- 300 skits involving the Haruhi dance
- Inside jokes. Just cause you get it, doesn't mean the 5000 people watching will.
- Yaoi/Yuri. Overdone, not shocking anymore.. I have fanfiction.net for this sort of thing.
- Zoolander ripoffs

I think a lot of dance off skits are getting a little to overplayed also. its a lot of the same characters over and over again. but if its not them then its the way they dance and the songs they use.

Original is soooo overdone these days! *is totally being sarcastic*

Seriously, though. To me, it doesn't matter if I'm seeing a skit concept a million times or for the first time, what makes the skit "good" or "bad" for me is the presentation, and how original they make it. While I'll cheer for a skit just because it's from an anime/game that I like, I'll cheer *more* for a skit from an anime/game/whatever I've never seen if it's just that mindblowingly awesome.

EDIT: A *lot* of people have mentioned that the Hare Hare Yukai is overdone. But do you immediately stop watching a skit just because it's got the Hare Hare Yukai in it? I ask because my friends and I are planning a skit with the HHY in it, but we've decided to change it up and make it (hopefully) unique - after seeing this thread. We're even going to poke fun at the fact that the HHY is generic and overdone *during* the skit. =3

Do I detect favouritism??? Well, I detect bias (From myself that is). My first skit was a NaruSasu skit. I don't think jokes about NaruSasu can really be overdone.. I've still seen some very enjoyable ones.. as long as they're not the same joke every time.. Although, you're right, it makes me sad that most Naruto skits I see seem pretty unprepared and pointless,..

I don't think these are nessesarily overdone, it totally depends on the jokes used.

We did an Inuyasha parody at Acen this year that got a lot of laughs at the con and good feedback on Youtube, it totally depends on the writing IMO. ^^

We wrote the skit at the height of Inuyasha's popularity, but didn't get a chance to perform it until this year due to scheduling conflicts between all of us.

I know it's not necessarily an overdone skit, but what really annoys me is if a skit isn't prerecorded and the cosplayers speak too fast to be understood, even if they have a microphone. That and skits with no apparent storyline. There were two Org XIII groups at my most recent con, one of them did a really well-organised skit using the microphones that lasted for about three minutes, didn't slow down in pace or fairly original gags, and got lots of laughs. The other group, admittedly had better costumes, but their skit was basically Zexion walking on with Saix on a leash and talking too fast about how he'd gone to the toilet in Marluxia's garden.....

I know [and agree] that the Haruhi dance is overdone. But what if it was used, for humer, for just a few seconds w/ out it being the focus and w/out the music? Just something a character started doing randomly in the background? If even that is overdone, would a dance from a JPop/Jrock group be better?
