I'm not a big fan of anything done "randomly" in a skit. If somebody busts out dancing in the background for no reason-- especially if it's not the focus, because then it's just got no reason at all to be there-- that only looks disorganized and unfunny to me.

Agreed. Ditto with people 'randomly' starting to dance (non-choreographed) at the end of a skit, or chasing each other around the stage for no reason. It just looks dumb and messy, and has ruined many skits that otherwise would have been award-worthy IMO.

Not anything like that *waves hands* The character is really genki and my friends and I thought it would be a good place for him to be dancing around, esepcially with the line being "We're all working very hard..." But I understand your points.

(new to the thread here, but have been reading it for a while now...but I had to ask this...)

What about choreographed random dancing? Like the main focus is a song, and two people are in the background dancing to it. However, they blatantly go against the lead singer's original dance plan and begin dancing "randomly" (this part is choreographed) while the singer's back is turned. Is that considered bad? (and we will assume that the dance was practiced many times and is not just a big mess)

It has to be pretty darned obvious that it's intentionally not the "right" dance. There was a bit in the skit I was in at Otakon this year where one tall character spun another, then my character tried to spin the same character and failed due to being too short to reach up high enough. Looking back, I'm not sure the audience realized that the failure was intentional.

The Lucky Star dance.

It isn't overdone at the moment, but it probably will be very soon.

I've read most of the comments here and I wanted to throw in my two cents, too. xB

First off, ANY skit that's main storyline relies on the fact that the characters are supposed to be gay is WAAAAY over done and severely annoying. (Sorry, Yaoi fangirls.) Oh, I'm sure you know the ones. Let's see, to think of some pairings off of the top of my head: AxelxRoxas, RikuxSora, SasukexNaruto, AnyonexNaruto, the list goes on and on. You guys have already mentioned it, but I felt that it needed to be stressed. For the millionth time. Let me put this in bold so some people will understand: MAKING OUT ON STAGE DOES NOT MAKE YOUR SKIT AWESOME. It makes us all watching want to die. If you want to do your little yaoi make out sessions on tape, please do it in your spare time. It's really a waste of time for everyone else. Or, as an alternative, you can go stand out in the hallway with the crazy people carrying around signs that say "Will Yaoi For $1!". This goes for Yuri people and couples, too.

Anything Naruto is overdone. Period. I don't care how clever you really think you are. @.@ I remember counting at LEAST 7 Naruto's within about 3 hours at a convention once.

POKEMON. LET IT GO.

Final Fantasy skits are old, too. You'd have to have a pretty damned good plot for your storyline to change my opinion on this one. Sorry, but I've seen too many bad ones.

To counter some of your comments about musicals, I think that they are AWESOME if executed right. No one wants to see someone getting up on stage hopping around for 3 minutes, afterall. I, myself, love choreographed dancing involving large groups. I think it's neat and takes a lot of time and effort to learn! ^^ Especially if you live in different states and are meeting up at a convention!

Like others have been saying, the Haruhi dance has been overdone. No need to delve deeper into that.

With that said, I think it's time to give some examples of skits that I thought were good. (I know that someone said we shouldn't give examples of bad skits, but good skits is a compliment, right?):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnGjXTeTE-0 - Peanut Butter Jelly Time skit with Little Slugger. (I know the banana falls into internet fads, but it's funny because of Little Slugger!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsQnYjyrN1s - Org XIII skit. I normally think they're lame, but this one was hilarious, I thought!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lf6yKjV-s4A - Cirque du Utena. My favorite skit to date!! This is prime example of great group choreography!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN_WNzsqYTk - Utena sword fighting. This is pretty good sword fighting! KH people should take lessons.

Haha! That's it for now. xD Those are just some of the ones I have saved on my Youtube favorites. Anyways, enjoy!

Judging a skit by the fandom involved is pretty poor taste, imo.

Seconded. Cosplaying from a really popular series means you have to be a little more creative in writing your skit to make it original, but saying there can be no more good skits from Naruto or whatever popular series just isn't true.

Hollee Marie: So, Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy/Naruto fans can't participate in masquerades because their series is "too popular"? How on earth is that fair? :/

And maybe it's just me, but I've hardly seen any yuri skits. Maybe some hints at it every now and then, but even that's incredibly rare. I wouldn't call that overdone. The making out, maybe, but the yuri itself? Not a chance.

Would any song from Avenue Q be considered overdone? You know, "The Internet Is For Porn", "If You Were Gay", that stuff.

We've gone over that already. The two songs mentioned, yes, the rest of the soundtrack, no.

However, if there was a parody calling it "The Internet Is For Okatu" or "If You Cosplay", could that be fair game? I know there are ways to utilize the music without the original lyrics being heard or buying the karoke version.

just jumping in here. How are you going to rhyme stuff with otaku? Plus; "porn" is one syllable, "otaku" is three, so good luck stuffing it in there gracefully. Someone at yaoi-con did "the internet is for yaoi" and it was just so painful to listen to because it just didn't flow at all.
