I Know Avenue Q is overdone but..Its never done near me O.O. In the cons by me if its an in joke or a overdone song or musical(not even mentioning yaoi or anytype of fanservice) it wins. Trust me i've seen some bad skits win, and some great skits lose. Why?The bad skit used a musical or yaoi ..or just plain fanservice. I personally wanted to do"If you were gay" with Quatre and Duo from gundam wing. I have never done a Fanservice or muscial before. You know whats never done....DRAMAS! Why? No one has a clear definition of how to do one.

I did the Hare Hare Yukai dance at Anime Boston 2007 (in April)... Was that before the dance became full-blown overdone in the US?
I do remember that a lot of videos at conventions of people doing the dance popped up during summer, and I decided that I'll probably never do the dance again unless someone really wants to see it. >_> It will be done at Anime Boston 2008 (March next year)... I hope that it will take place before it gets over-popular and driven into the ground.

Fanservice and randomly dancing aren't all that funny anymore. People need to be imaginative, not fanservice-y. Getting laughs isn't all that great, and I'll betcha that someone could win on art form alone. Convey a message that'll have people crying, not laughing at someone else's fandom. Unfortunately, in a crowd of Otaku, the only way you'll be able to get half the crowd to cry is if you play Ayaka's 'Why' and send a Cloud Strife and Zack Fair out there to re-enact Zack's death.
But if you want laughs, look no further than saying 'OMGNUUU, Roxas, I love you!' Sometimes I really hate fanon. It kills canon with a knife.

A-FREAKIN'-MEN. I tend to use the term "fanDUMB" instead of "fandom" when it comes up...

Being new to this thread and lazy for not reading everything xp I'm not sure if this has come up yet but...
At every con I think, there is one skit were there will be a popular group like Naruto, Bleach, KH, FF, etc that will get on stage and play yet, another popular song like "sexy back", "numa numa", "gay bar" and that will be it. Every year I see it, and you know it's funny for the first few seconds watching villains or tough guy characters act silly, but then the joke kinda fades... and dies... and overkill. Is this just me? Now I've seen of skits that were thought of at the last minute, even fully edited/thought of while waiting in line, next before they even went on stage and the skit turned out wonderful. I am not against yaoi and showing your pride, but I am seriously tired of Kingdom Hearts 2, Axel and Roxas fanservice. That, in itself, is seriously overdone in any of its forms, on or off stage. When it's a skit, the plot is all about, "Oh Roxy, don't go Roxy. I'll miss you, got it memorized? *dance contest*" And then there's some awkward laughs just to satisfy the group so they'll leave and not kiss. But they do. And it's weird 'cause we've seen it so many times.
C'mon cosplayers, there's some awesome plots to be had with those characters--don't just fall back on what's been done. I swear, if I had a proper cosplay partner, I'd get skit'ing and revolutionize~ Oh. Or. Or those skits were two guys enter, look longingly at each other, then, suddenly, one of the guys turns into a woman. I don't /ever/ understand the logic behind those skits. Super late in this thread.. but hey.
I think even though Hare Hare Yukai skits are still just about at one or two a con, I've seen the dance itself performed so many times by so many different people that I just sit there for the 3 or so minutes and cry Inwardly. When a skit drags on into oblivion even something that started out good can be completely ruined. Really regardless of the content I find that even if it's something that really doesn't appeal to anyone I can forgive it if it's short . Fifteen seconds of bad skit is pretty easy to forget. Maybe I'm too forgiving but I'm kind to anyone who looks like they put some form of thought into their skits. |

Eeek..regarding the Avenue Q thing..
Some friends and I are doing a skit (hopefully at Ohayocon) to one of the songs but we're re-writing the words and singing that to the tune of the song. It's one of the lesser known songs so no "If you were gay" or "internet is for porn" from us..lol Would that count as overdone since we're re-writing the original content?

I think it's been pretty much widely agreed in this thread...
- Characters just singing a song that kinda relates to them but not really = not funny. - Characters singing a song parody that entirely relates to them = comedy gold. ![]()

Sweeeeet. XD! Funny thing is we only have to re-write the two verses and change a few words in the chorus and it fits things regarding anime cons *perfectly*
We definately do love the lols. Screw awards, we want to make people laugh. ^_^ Bad thing is: None of us are really that great at singing. So that little factor will either work in our favor or make people cry, "Whhhhhhyyyyy?"

I don't know how "not great" you mean, but I might get another friend/friends to record it for me and then lip synch >.> Nothing ruins an awesome parody faster than cringing when the singers hit a wrong note!
