I would like to see more people who have studied theatre and/or writing creating skits. I don't mean that people should take classes; just that it would be cool if more people paid attention when watching stage productions (I include watching other skits on YouTube in this) and make a not of what works and what doesn't. Same for writing. I don't think every skit creator has to be an English major, but I think we'd see an improvement in skits if people would practice writing other things. Writing something good (especially comedy) takes practice. I don't think most people can come out of the blue and write a home run their first time out. I think if some people took it a little more seriously we would see great things. I've seen some very creative people who could have had really great skits if they had just put even a little more work, time, practice, and care into it.

That said, even when I'm not enthralled by the skit, I do like seeing so many people of varying ages getting up and creating something and then presenting it to an audience. It's a good experience for them, at least

That's why I said in the "Skits That SHOULD BE Done" threads that like Fred Allen used to say about television, the cosplay skit it is a medium where things are either rare or well done.

I totally agree with you SirenaBlack. Good writing and good acting are what make a good stage performance. In this age of TV shows and movies reliant on stupid jokes, this idea has been lost, I think.

I am thinking of daring the masquerade at Animé Los Angeles, the con I'm planning to go to next January, even though it will be my first anime con. What the skit will be like depends on who I decide to cosplay as. But I am both an English major and someone with some acting training, as well as an avid writer, so I found your words encouraging.

They only give single-person masqueraders 90 seconds for their skit at ALA though (based on last year's rules; they don't have the current ones up yet), so that doesn't give me much time to work with. But since they require spoken narration to be pre-recorded, I'll have time to make sure I fit within the time limit.

I'm going to go ahead and hazard a guess that the next overdone thing is going to be parodies of the Old Spice commercial. In the last masquerade I went to, there were three entries that did it.

I honestly don't mind Hare Hare Yukai dancers... if they DO IT RIGHT. All the ones i see, they're doing the dance wrong and just don't know it. If i see some good dancers out there with that dance, then its fine by me. Grats to them for actually taking the time to learn it.

As for skits i think are really overdone... are skits with bad audio. Really, people. If you spend all this time on good cosplays... spend some time on better audio quality :\

Not sure if its been said already, but Lady Gaga skits are already overdone. There were 3 in the last con I went to, and there are plenty on youtube..

I don't mind avenue q as long as its not stupid. Like the Gay song applied to an obvious pairing. Blegh. But if it were something planned out, well written, and not one of the usual songs one would hear (Racist, Sucks to be You, Gay song, Porn song. ew.) I haven't heard much of the "The more you Ruv Someone". I think that one deserves to be done at least once before Avenue Q is ruled out entirely.

@ mokulenp- Seriously? It didn't die two years ago? Like, even parodies (i.e. WE'RE NOT DOING THAT IN A SKIT, it's OVERDONE) are overdone now.

@ Aelita- Go for it! As a theatre student with an interest in English myself, I can testify that the congoing world needs more people like you. XD And you can do a lot in ninety seconds! Heck, before this AFest, the longest skit my group will have ever done has been 2:30.

@ ValVeeta- That's true, Gaga is wayyy overdone. Luckily, Texas cons are a little bit behind on trends- we're kind of insular. *is excited to be the opening act for this weekend*

Don't get me wrong, when there's good ones theres good ones. You were the one that showed me that awesome soul eater skit right? See, that took planning, thought, and work. So I know that one will be wicked.
But others look like they were thrown together and not practiced, or don't make sense... or really just look like it was done for the sake of it being a Lady Gaga skit because that's what is popular now. I think that is what bugs me, the ones that are done just for the trend, which can be applied to pretty much anything. Yucky.

Oh, and good luck! I'm sure you guys are gonna be awesommeee! Be sure to send me a video when it ends up on youtube, I wanna see ^-^

We didn't have ANY Lady Gaga skits at our convention this last weekend. However, there were at least 3 skits that used the Haruhi dance, and 2 skits that were Inuyasha/Kagome banter (SIT), and several Vocoloid skits.
The Vololoid skits are what get me. It's just.... there's no REAL PLOT. No REAL series. It's all just AMVs and fan creations. The AMVs are cool, but really, the "character personalities" are not canon because they do not really exist. I don't mind walk ons or people dressing like them, because that's all they are, and IMAGE.

This. I particularly hate it when a skit starts out strong, builds steam...and ends in a dance-off. Anticlimactic much?
