Question Umi Ryuzaki's fencing-foil sword...

I'm planning on putting together an Umi costume and I'm stumped on how to make her sword. I've wondered about using wires or foam, but the weapon is so thin... and clear. The thing looks like it's made out of glass in some of the pics I've seen.

Is there any material transparent enough and strong enough to work? I think I saw it done before, but I have no idea how. Help!

I never really thought of her weapon being clear... A bit reflective, sure, but not clear.

You could look up fencing swords, perhaps..? There's quite a few materials that could work, I know, but it depends on what you're willing to work with. o_o

Yeah.. Umi's final sword isn't quite as thin as a fencing sword at least, so it shouldn't be too insanely hard. ^_^; I'm going to have to make one myself this summer, I think.

dangit I've actually seen someone cosplay umi with a *clear* sword on usagichan site.. I think she used clear hard plastic. I wish I had the pic on file. I'd say you could cut the plastic into the basic shape and melt it together to form the blade. The one I saw with the girl was gigantic...toddles off to if she can find the said pic.

It's a costume I'm putting together for a friend... sewing is not her forte. It's *hopefully* for the Comicon this year. If not, maybe DesertCon. <- I love this smiley!

If you can't use a fencing foil, using a fencing epee. Its almost the same thing but its bigger. Other details is that instead of a rectangular shape a long the blade, its v shaped. But watch out for cons since even though its a practice blade, its still considered a weapon.

(ever been hit by an epee, it made a dent in my fencing mask)

Wood.

Make it from wood. The blade and the hilt.

Where would I find an epee? *has never even heard of an epee*I live in the middle of nowhere below San Diego County. I don't think there's a fencing equipment supplyer within one hundred miles of here... ;_; Now that I think of it, there's not even a fencing class...

regarding the wood: How would I get it that thin and still keep it strong? I could try Balsam.....hmm.

Thank you for your great suggestions! Everything is helping a lot!

ooh! I made an umi sword! I made mine out of wood and sculpty.
first you cut out the blade shape, then you sand it so it gets smooth. paint. cut a dowel to the desired length and put a notch in one end (to put the blade into) paint it and glue the blade to the dowel. Using sculpty (or any other clay that can be oven baked) and make all the detailed pieces (make them seperate from the sword.. you will glue them on later) bake, paint, and glue them on. use paper clay or another type of air drying clay to fill in any holes/gaps to make the sward look nicer.
I wish I had pictures to show you but they were sadly deleted when my computer crashed. but maybe I can borrow it from my friend to take more pictures (she bought it from me for $40).
