Ah Joe, seeing that there are over 10,000 members on Cosplay.com, and that I am older than all but 10 of them or something like that, let me give you some unasked for advice, even though this is a dead-thread for a while:
I don't know Mel, but people generally want their privacy. Going to cons, talking to other con-goers doesn't mean that they necessarily want to talk to newly met acquaintances off the con. Giving people their privacy and personal space is a good thing. Despite their flamboyant outfits, most con-goers are still regular human beings (some I have my doubts, possibly they are aliens
). Meaning that for example some of them are actually quite shy. If they wear a skimpy outfit, chances are it just means that the character wears such things, and not necessarily that they have such personality.
So you have to be aware of people's emotions. You probably do mean well, but you don't want to come out sounding too pushy either. I hope this makes sense. I don't post often on cosplay.com and I am quite busy most of the times, but I will gladly discuss further if you want.
