Hair dyeing
Or however you spell 'dyeing'.
Finally, my mom has allowed me to dye my hair some unnatural colour, for the character I'm cosplay. It's a comic character (webcomic, so not popular), and her hair is black with white streaks. Basically looking like a skunk. My hair is dark, therefore it should take the black hair dye fairly well, but I'm worried about the white streaks. I've never bleached my hair, and have heard many horror stories about salon bleach (being extremely strong). I am getting this professionally done, and would like some input about bleach. Its not my whole head, just streaks. Also, is there any way to make them white, instead of a yellowish colour? |

(First off, thanks for spelling 'dyeing' right. My head cracks just a little every time I see someone talk about 'dying' their hair or even worse, 'dieing'.)
If you're getting it professionally done, you can count on your stylist to get the yellow out. Salon bleach -is- strong, as it needs to be to completely remove color from dark hair, but you'll come out with less damage if it's done by a pro. Basically, just relax and let her/him work.

(I second the correct spelling sentiment.)
I agree with pretty much what Mangochutney said. The stylist at the salon knows what they're doing, and if you ask they'll probably tell you what to do if you're really worried about your hair being dried out. Though, this is what I did after I bleached out a streak of my hair, and the lightest we got it was to this brassy blond color (after one bleach job. I didn't want to kill the hair completely). Afterwards, I kept my conditioner in a lot longer than usual to help with the "dead hair" feel. Keep in mind, this was done at home so the bleach killed my hair more than what would have happened if I went to a salon, but it took maybe a month or so to get my hair back to a relatively healthy texture.

If you want something which is much less expensive, I would just skip dying and buy some white hair extensions. If you're hair is fairly dark, and then dyed BLACK it will be a nightmare to be turned white, and will be a lot.
Hair extensions are fairly cheap by comparison (and you can do them yourself if you like!)

If your streaks come out more yellow than you want, you can lighten them further by using white toner. You can get it at Sally's and probably other places that sell a good amount of hair products. If you're getting it done professionally though, they should probably know to use that.

To make "yellowish" bleached hair white, use a violet-based toner to cancel out the yellow. When I bleached my hair to a pale yellow colour (as light as it could go using bleach), I used "Ultra White Minx" from Roux, and my hair was white. ^_^
If you bleach sections of your hair, you'll have to be extra careful with it. Use a deep conditioner, and don't brush it when it's wet. Do you have a picture of the character? Depending on how the streaks are situated, you could also just dye your hair black and put in white extensions. That way you could avoid all bleach damage.

Finally Something I Know About! :d
ok. As someone who dye's their hair random weird colours. I CAN HELP! (squees) *cough* >.>
first the black. buy completly permenant hair dye and make sure to completly separate the streaks you will be dying white from the rest of your dyed hair. EVEN IN THE SHOWER when you're washing out the dye. White: after a few washes (2-3) of your hair (to make sure that ALL of the black hair dye is out of your hair) buy a hair bleaching kit (not the blonde hair dye kit, just plain old bleaching. The colour code is usually 001 or 002 around there ) and bleach your strands to the lightest possible shade. When thats washed out you should have a very light blonde (still yellow-y though). @_@ so much to do now theres this temporary hair dye (lasts one - two months depending on colour etc.) called "Manic Panic" that comes in a creame formula. It comes in a small cylinder jar about 3 inches by 3 inches, and is sold in some Walmarts, most shoppers drugmarts (and other pharmacy's) for around $15 canadian if I can remember properly (you can also buy it online at their website for cheaper probably. Their website also has pictures of actual people using the dye and comments on how well it was). They have a white cream dye that when applied to bleached hair, takes out the remaining yellow in the hair harmlessly. That way you can have pure white streaks without any blonde in them DDhave fun |

umm, bleaching dyed hair is very, very difficult. I didn't realize I still had about an inch of dyed black hair left and I tried bleaching some of my hair. The "virgin" hair made it to about white, but the ends that were still black made it to a medium-lightish blonde. It took a loooong time and my ends are all dry and frizzy.
