steampunk necessities
I was gonna cosplay as a steam punk and I was wondering if there was anything aside from goggles, that one should have when cosplaying as a steampunk.
If you have items, if you can provide a picture, so I know what you're talking about. |

Steampunk is sort of high-tech Victoriana, so go for Victorian-style garments with an industrial twist (more functional rather than frilly, usually), maybe a bit worn, leather instead of fabric, etc. Lots of brass buttons rather than zippers, pocketwatches, various brass doodads. Try looking at photos of working-class people from the 1800s and then punk it up a bit.

I'd check out the steampunk forums over at brassgoggles - they have lots of really cool ideas for props and apparel.

Alternatively to goggles...
If you use glasses, Bausch & Lomb still make the traditional side-mounted magnification loupes. I have a set of these for one of my costumes. http://www.bausch.com/en_US/consumer...sic_metal.aspx They're more attractive then goggles but equally as unusual. |

Also, for a specific for the OP - figure out some kind of profession for your cosplay and have an appropriate prop. Most likely you will be some sort of adventurer; I've seen lots of cool guns out there.

Wow, these are awesome links! *bookmarks them*
Everyone's said pretty much what I thought of. I think leather especially for clothes/details on clothes--brown leather, very weathered, with metal parts/fasteners. Thrift stores are a good idea for old leather jackets you can rip up, scuffed boots, etc. |

I was thinking of getting some mock leather to make a corset and maybe get some laced fabric and spray glue it over the corset in spots, or should i just leave it as a regular leather corset with buckles and shoe like lace up on the side?

A lot of the steampunk aesthetic (at least, my favorite examples) really shines via contrasts - simple silhouettes, but lots of fine detail in places (rivets, gears, aging, etc.); organic vs mechanical; elegance vs grunge elements.
So, if the rest of your outfit is complex, I'd suggest making the corset in the plain leather with more subtle detailing/aging. But, if it's vice-versa, I'd suggest something fancier for the corset.
