costume design for Tales of the Abyss?

I'm new at cosplaying, so I'll apologize in advance. Anyway, after looking at the custom-made cosplay costumes on ebay and elsewhere, I've decided the price tags are ridiculous, and I'm going to try to make a costume myself. I'm most interested in cosplaying as Sync the Tempest, but as a backup I could do Jade (I wouldn't have to get a wig that way).

The problem is, I don't even know where to start. Are there any templates or fabrics online that would give me a general gist of what I should do to make the costume not look like total crap? And where would I find a wig that would suit Sync? I browsed through the wig store here but none of it would be appropriate for him.

Thanks. (Incidentally, the cons I'm planning on attending are Anime Boston, Connecticon and maybe Animenext.)
