Question Ryuk/Rem (Death Note) Face/Body makeup

My friend and I are planning on cosplaying as Ryuk and Rem along with this group of Death Note cosplayers at AWA this year. What kind of makeup should we use on the face and maybe even the hands (though Ryuk has gloves on)? How should we do the noses? Annnnnd Ryuk's mouth...it kind of goes half way up his face-ish. Any suggestions?
Thnx!

As always, a picture would really help. I have no idea what kind of makeup the character has. ^^;

If you need to colour your whole body you might need some kind of sealer to make sure you don't rub makeup off on everything, everyone and especially on your costume. Search the makeup forums. There are many good threads on sealers and what kinds to use.

As for the mouth you can use dark eyeshadow and foundation to make your mouth look bigger. You'll have to keep it mostly closed to keep the illusion though. ^^;

I'm partial to ryuk, so forgive me if my answer is one-sided.

Doing Ryuk without Prosthetics takes a bit of creativity. You won't be able to simulate the upturned nose or the enlarged bulbous eyes, unless you use really crafty highlight and shadow techniques. Even then, it will only look right from specific angles. If you search the cosplay gallery you can get some inspiration on how to do it simply.

As far as types of makeup, Kryolan Aquacolor would be easiest. It provides a nice matte foundation appropriate for both ren and ryuk.

Ryuk greatly varies depending on the image, so there is a lot of freedom. Most ryuk cosplays (including mine) use gloves. You should only need to makeup the head and bust.

As far as the mouth, he just has lipstick (so to speak) around his mouth to accent it. Dark aquacolor makeup would be better for adherance, but not required. Touched up around the lips with matching lipstick if possible. The colors you select is up to you, he varies from light grey to blue to purple to almost rosey.

For Rem, you can just use white face paint and purplish-pinkish-fusciaish lipstick.
Also, for Ryuk, you can just do your mouth/"lips" like Eric's from The Crow.

Hope that I was of help.

Exclamation

LOL! I did a make-up test of Ryuk last night. Here's what I found out.

If you can, try an air-brush. My grey make-up was actually grey and white Halloween creme make-up mixed, and it looked streaky. In some places, I had to apply it really thick.

For the black around the eyes and mouth, liquid eyeliner works OK, but it smells and tends to peel after a while. The black lipstick I used didn't cover very well, and my lips felt funny with it on (I don't think it was an allergy, but I'm going to be cautious if I use that stuff again). I ended up going over both the eyes and mouth with black creme make-up again -- make sure that what you use is non-toxic and can be used that way.

For the eyes, I might cut a pingpong ball in half and have fabric pupils so I can see. The nose will be the hardest part; I'm still not sure how that'll work yet.

Hope that helps!

For the foundation I recommend
Some black charcole and normal foundation
mixed together, all out, it turned out pretty
well for me when I had to cosplay someone with
skin as grey as ryuk's and it gave a more natural
look than what WilwarinAndamar had suggested.
After applying the mixture over a few times, it should
look right...
I might do a test an send it to you in few days.

Oh and for the eyeliner and lips, I would recommend
LOreal HIP ColourTruth HIP Cream Eyeliner, and to
outline as simple black liquid eyeliner.
The eyeliner cream comes in a round container much like
lipgloss and is simply what it's named. Eyeliner cream.
You just take a bit in your fingertips or a brush
and paint the area you want covered in it. And it is very
durable. ^-^
