I'm looking for some help with getting a jacket like Matt's...

Use the search engine, you will like what you see. Simply type Matt Cosplay in the search engine and you will find many helpful results.

For the 'fuzzy' stuff, use faux fur. Most people use a sheepy material, but it is fur. I looked very close at scans of Matt from the manga, and it doesn't look like no wool or sheep to me, clearly fur.
Simply buy a jacket of shearling or type fabric, cut off the sleeves, and sew or glue on the faux fur. Thats what I did, and it works wonders. If the jacket doesn't come with a 'high neck' collar, then make it yourself by using the sleeves you cut off.

My suggestion would just be to go to a local thrift store and look around for a vest like his. That's what I am planning to do for my Matt cosplay. Good luck!

Once again, sticking my head into another Matt Help Thread.

As for the trim, it does appear to be fur, however I'm of the opinion that fake fur just doesn't look all that great, it's either too long, or it's too thin in the pile. In all acutality if you were to find Matt's vest in real life, it's more likely to be made with sheepskin, in fact, coats that looked like his jacket were in style when I was in middle school - and they were made with suede and sheepskin. Again, it's a matter of taste. However, I think it's going to be VERY hard to find his vest, I'm pretty sure you'll find something close, but they'll all be too short and the collar won't be high enough. The best bet with his vest is making it yourself. Which I'm sure my Matt will tell you was a total pain.

His boots, as I went into great detail into in another thread and will not bother typing out again (look for a thread about Matt's Boots) - do exist but are hellishly expensive and totally weird looking. You can get away with just using standard issue combat boots. Just look for them on eBay or typing it into Google. That's your best bet.

Shirts and gloves, also something that can be aquired with the assistance of Google. You just have to be paitent and be willing to spend the time to pick through the results to find the right things. I think that's the downfall of many Death Note cosplayers, it's all street clothes, but they're all very distinct so finding something that's exactly right takes more time than people are willing to put into it. As I am fond of saying about DN cosplay: Death Note Cosplay: No one wears this crap.

I know everything about fur, so trust me on this. You just have to choose the right kind of fur. Don't use 'fun' fur, which is like.. 9 bucks a yard. You will have to throw in atleast $20 a yard for good quality fur. There is different 'lenghs' of fur. I say go for Medium pile fur, which is neither too long nor too short.

Since you only need about a half of yard, go around furry communities and ask for scraps. I have plenty of faux fur in my work room, since I work with it all the time, so I didn't have to buy some for my Matt cosplay. If you need some fur, let me know, and I will give you enough for the coat and for a mistake or two. The fur I work with is very real to the touch and very good quality, not some fun fur. Fur can look great, as long as you know what fur your getting.

Forgive me if I sounded rude, but it clearly looks like faux fur.

I am going to give up my Matt cosplay, so I don't mind selling mine to you. I was cosplay as the anime version of Matt. Let me know if your interested.

Wow...$222? That is really expensive, and like you said overpriced. Though the pants bother me that they have there. I can't tell if their actually made out of denim or their just regular pants. In the anime you can clearly see that he is wearing denim (to me atleast), but that is a good reference picture for his jacket/vest.

Exactly. It looks much too bland than denim, it seems to be some other fabric. The pants are actually pretty damn easy to make. =) Just get some jeans, cut it up, and sew them back together.

Yeah, and I don't think Matt would look right without some type of jean. It just wouldn't look, well, streetish or bikery if that makes sense. (If those are even words..heh heh)
