How to shorten a long wig?
Sorry for the noobish question - this is my first wig, and my mom already thinks cosplay is a waste of money. If I mess it up and have to buy another wig, she'll never let me hear the end of it... DX.
Anyways...I've got the Ivy wig, the end of which hangs just above the small of my back, but I need it to be about shoulder-blade length. My question is: how should I cut it? I don't want the ends to look blunt, but cutting that much hair off with the scissors held at 90 degrees is going to take forever! Is it possible to cut the hair in a straight line, a little longer than I need it, and then "razor" the ends? Or will it still end up looking gross and choppy if I do it that way?

You'd be surprised how quickly the feathering step goes--that's the bit where the scissors are at 90 degrees. You don't have to do the initial cut that way, though. Cut it off in a straight line slightly longer than you need it, and start feathering the ends by nipping upward into the bottom fringe with your scissors.

I cut layers into things, whether they're large or small layers. I hold sections of hair maybe 1 inch wide between my index and third finger. I make upward diagonal cuts until the ends look natural.

I use thinning shears and cut over and over again in the same spot until I've eventually cut all the hair. This gives an *almost* razored effect, as the thinning shears only cut a few strands at a time, making most of them slightly different lengths. It's time consuming though. And it cramps your hands if your thinning shears are rusty like mine.

Thank you all so much! I think I'm feeling confident enough to at least pick up a pair of scissors now... ^-^

No problem :P
When I cut the Dante wig for my friend Limebarb's commissions, I started by cutting it short but longer than I wanted it, then worked up from there. It worked like a charm.
