im gonna get my husband to take pictures of it tonight.

im still trying to figure out how i want the dress to look when its done. ive always liked the look of this with the large gather to one side, and this with smaller gathers going around. i might just stick with a normal hem with a bit of lace or a ruffle though

1st ref pic - Oh, I see what you meant by the "gather"!
If you look closely, though, that dress doesn't gather. It just has an assymetrical cut to look like a gather. :3 I think that is definitely doable in your case. You just have to be rather careful and I'd recommend you add the ruffle too.

2nd ref pic - Though the idea may look cute, look at the way the skirt is constructed. The waist itself is gathered so there is fabric to actually gather at the hem. This is what I do not think is doable with the pattern you have chosen.

yea thats why im leaning towards just a ruffle on a straight bottom, but once i get better, i could try more complex styles

I second the "hmmm" on the cream and white. When you put the two together it always ends up with the cream looking dirty and the overall appearance being mismatched. Though I think a powder blue would look great on you Solai with your coloring and skin tone

Before I go off and buy some horrid fabric, what kind should I be looking for? I'm sure polyester is out of the question since it's so thin and kinda eww, but I've seen a rayon/linen blend and it looked really nice. So what would be the best material for making the dress? Thanks

Medium weight twill, perhaps? Go for a cotton/polyester blend because there's less chance of it shrinking. But it's always a good idea to pre-shrink your fabrics BEFORE you cut any pattern pieces out.

I also agree with either twill or cotton/plyester.
