Smile Armor Made From Pvc Pipe And Foamboard?

Hey guys, this one is from my sister.

She wants to make armor for a character she drew in art class (awww :P). She was wondering if you could use pvc pipes for arm/leg guards and foamboard (foamcore) for various armor pieces and would they look alright or not (if not, how can she go around making them look cool(er)? She plans on using basically anything you can find at a local walmart or lowes or whatever like that. Do you guys have any suggestions?
