Question Where does one buy GESSO?

Gesso is (I think) a type of primer paint that's great for making props but I have NO idea where I can buy it. Can it be found at Hobby Lobby or Lowes or something? I need to buy some before Saturday for a prop weapon I'm making...Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

But I read that Gesso can be sanded down for a smooth finish and that it's especially good for insulation foam so that it won't melt when you paint it normally.

Michael's carries it with the canvas and acrylic paints. You can get it in small bottles or huge tubs.

yeah, Hobby Lobby sold it in big buckets. I was gonna buy one but then it didn't have any using instructions on the label so I wasn't sure if that's the same Gesso for this. By the way, if there's no instruction, how does one know how to use it in the first place?

Gesso is gesso. just paint it on what you want to paint. You can adds some Matte Medium if you want to thin it, but chances are you will want a nice thick coat.

Really?! I'll go buy some from Walmart then!
I was going to go to hobby lobby to get it but it's like an hour away to the closest one. If they really have it at walmart then that'll make things a lot easier!! -^.^-

It's not FOR MAKING PROPS, it's a white paint that works for that. It's got a plaster-like feel to it. I used if for my Marth armor. ='] First armor, too, so it's very easy to start with.

If you are using gesso to strengthen the foam it isn't going to work for you. Gesso is basically a primer, its meant to prepare surfaces that normally wouldn't take paint well on its own. Its sandable because canvas when you first apply it isn't actually even. It has REALLY noticeable texture to it.

I think what she means about it being good for foam is it wont mess up the foam as a primer (meaning it wont soak into or melt the foam), versus priming with white paint. I remember reading that in the insulation foam tutorial I believe.
And no, Gesso is not really 'just white paint', its got other gunk in it. :P
