There have?
Er, well, yeah, other than whatserface's San+Wolf and Midna+Link. Those weren't really 'pantomime' anyway, they were more mount+rider than single creature.

I rather look forward to seeing how your guys' Ixion turns out, Deruka, very interesting idea.

Yah. Them. Plus others.
I don't like the WolfLink/Midna. And they're so famous on /cgl/ glad their snarky attitudes get them bit in the butt. :/

Their Wolf Link makes me want to try my own attempt at it. xD

Sorry to bust in like this but I would like a little help. I am in the process of making a Darkrai costume. I have already covered the costume with fabric but I need to figure out away to make the "ectoplasm" spikes that come off the shoulders stay up and not dip towards the floor due to weight. As you guys seem to be well versed in this area so any advice you might give me would be helpful.

For reference this is what I got so far-http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1491852/

Edit:
Well sorry i forgot to mention this but the entire body form is made from a chicken wire lattice and the real problem with the spikes is not in the spikes themselves but in the connection of the shoulder blades to the main body. And as for remaking it I can't my parents only let me make the costume with the knowledge that the large pieces could be folded down thus the chicken wire frame.
This is the framework of the body pieces. http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1473651/

I think you should redo some of that costume to look more like Darkrai's actual form. The body isn't entirely acurate, since it's slimming all the way down.. It'll look better if you made the length longer, and puffed out the bottom.
As for the spikes on the shoulders, you can make them out of foam. Simple carving with a knife or exacto should do the trick, then just apply the material. Plus it'll be strong enough, with enough layers, to stand up. If it doesn't by itself, you can simply foam the shape, and stuff the inside of the spike with polyfil or something, and if needed, add wire for extra support.
It looks like you stuffed them only.. or something similar, which would explain the droop.

Koisnake: yeah it would probably be easier to make it that way, but we thought of this cosplay as a joke but then decided we'd actually really like to do it! XD its also really fun to do a 2 person cosplay, i just hope we dont injure any1 (or my back!!)

GenGerard: holy crap a darkrai cosplay!! good luck, cant wait to see that!

Animal characters rule.

I just found this thread and have to say it's very interesting. A lot of what has been said is exactly how I've always looked at costumes. I love making animal type anime characters because generally they're tough to pull off and thus very unique. I tend to abandon a costume idea if I see that someone else has pulled it off perfectly.

In any case, as for wing material, I bought some thin acrylic sheeting online and think that might be good for the Valoo wings. Unfortunately I have no experience in animatronics so I can't help there. Unfortunately that was a while ago and I don't remember the website I bought it from.

For fur suppliers, I've ordered from Distinctive Fabrics, Mendel's, and imstuffedfur.

Currently, I'm starting work on Byakko no Rangetsu from the anime Onmyou Taisenki. I hope to have it finished in a month or so. I'll be buying the material for the muscle suit tomorrow.

Just out of curiousity, do mascot characters made with fleece count on this thread? I have nowhere near the skill, budget or space to make fursuits so that's what I do.

Yup ^^ A fursuit suit is basically a creature cosplay, so your good to go.

Me and my friends are making Kon, Ririn, Cloud and Nova from Bleach. :3 (Or, rather, I'm making the costumes -.-'')
I'm going to be Kon, and I feel so smart for figuring out how to do the head. :P
