Question Where to buy good wood

I've been working on my Oathkeeper keyblade for awhile now and I've been running into the problem of knots inside the wood. I bought it from home depot so I guess I got what I payed for. I got a pine wood plank and on the surface is looked fine but once I started cutting it out I came across knots that were in the middle of the wood which is causing pieces to break off.

I was wondering if anyone knew of somewhere to get better quality wood for props?

Pine is not a good wood if you donít want knots, Birch is ideal in terms of being a softer wood like pine but has little not no knots.
Maple is another one thatís nice.

I went with pine because most of the post I read pointed to that as being the easiest to work with but I guess easy comes with a price.

But I'm willing to experiment to try to get the best I can out of my prop. Do you know where to get good pieces of birch or maple?

It's hit or miss mostly on where you can buy it I can get is from a Canadian hardware store that tends to carry every type of wood. I would say start looking in your yellow pages and phone any local wood working shop or supplies stores and ask them if they might carry it or know were you can get it. I prefer to buy my base products in person.

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=827 I pretty sure they carry wood in store as well as hard to find fixture for trunks and stuff (ordered from the before)

Birch is what most prop makers use for display swords since itís easier to carve like pine.

Thank you for the information. I'll be giving birch a try.
