Mmmkay, sewing newbie

Right! I have decided to go with No face from sprited away as my first costume ever.

Problem: I have no idea how to pattern the fabric.
Consider.. a net for a geometric shape.

Refer to: this

forgive me if I'm being too vague
But I need help!

Well, it would be nice to try to get away without having any seams at all to keep with the shadowy-ness of Noh Face. You might be able to just sew in a few double ended darts to shape it around the head. I'd get some test fabric (an old sheet would do), cut a hole for your face then get a victim, er, I mean, a friend to put it on. Take some straight pins and just sort of "pinch" the fabric together and pin it whenever you need to take tucks to give it the shape you want around the head and shoulders then sew darts in those places. Play around with the number, size and position of the darts until you get the look you want before you do it on the real fabric. Here's some info on darts:

If you want a less drapy, more tubular look, then you could put a seam all the way down the back. I'd start off with a modified cone shape - try putting a bulge at the top so that it is round over the top of your head, but hangs straighter from your chin. Sort of like this (but I've exaggerated the curve a bit):

Again, I'd get some test fabric - just enough to cover your head and shoulders - and play around with the curvature before using the real fabric. If you do end up doing a curved seam, be sure and clip the seam allowance of the curved part. (Look at the bottom of this page:

Good luck! ^_^
