Very true. I've had a decent amount of work on DA so I'm very familiar with the site, and I know its creepier side (Which I thankfully never dealt with because, let's face it, I'm no model).

I have seen my fair share of negativity on others cosplays there. Granted they're few and far between, but it's there.

Honestly, I've had surprisingly good luck with my own cosplay experiences, as I normally get compliments on my costume. The rudest comment I may have gotten was a "Who the hell are you supposed to be?!?" Then again, this wasn't at a convention, but Halloween night at my old college, where the this behavior was to be expected.

I dont think so...all I can do is flag the comment as spam. I can't report him actually, or even report the picture.

My first convention when I was 11, I cosplayed as Bridget from guilty gear.
There were a lot of offensive r-word comments and people pushing me around.
That's why after I get healthy and strong enough I want to cosplay him again.
I wanna be able to stand up for myself and still be happy cosplaying the characters I relate to.

There was also another thing that made me really sad at the last convention I went to..
I was cosplaying as Ciel, the one in my icon. I was having really bad allergies that day and the eye patch made it unbearably painful. I was crying face-down on a table waiting for my mom to get some allergy medicine from the hotel and these girls came by and asked me to give them a picture. I couldn't respond because my face was covered in tears and I was really not feeling well. They kinda pulled the feathers and flower off of my hat and stomped it into the floor. I knew I felt something hit me, but couldn't even look until my mom came back with medicine and told me that my accessory was in the floor and smashed.

But um.. in consideration I have had it a lot better than some people.
So for that I'm really happy. I just wish that people would be kinder to all of us cosplayers.
We have feelings too, even though we're dressed up and sometimes don't seem like it.
Its usually how brazen or cheeky that these rude things are said like we dont have feelings. Online its harder to express your tone. But in rl they just really need a wake up call because thats not cool. -.-

Im sorry that happened. Why wouldn't they have asked if you were ok. Thats just mean.

Not to me personally, but I've had it said to my face a few times that cosplayers are "freaks" and that cons are "freak shows" from someone I deal with regularly and respect otherwise. Note that she still doesn't know that I'm one of the "freaks". I guess I can understand where she comes from, but there's no need to bash people like that just because you don't understand them.

unfortunately i have seen this with cosplayers too though. no matter how close knit a community is there will always be jealousy. Cosplayers who see a cosplayer who may be more skilled then them, or better looking (in their opinion) taller, cuter...what have you. and will feel the need to put that person down to make themselves feel better because they are not getting the attention they want and need.

I kind of told off a cosplay elitist type on my local con's facebook page the other day.
I posted an article on cosplay bullying, and he went on about how cosplay was an art form, and if people were going to do it for fun, they should just do it at home, because bad cosplay ruins the character and ruins the hobby.

I answered "So you're saying that people should pretty much sequester themselves in their workrooms and not come out until they're master level crafters? Even the best cosplayers out there started off making lots of beginner's mistakes, they went to conventions and had fun, and with encouragement from other supportive people, they kept coming, and got better...I'm glad conventions are welcoming to people of all skill levels, and aren't treated like juried exhibitions, where only the best of the best need apply. What's ruining the hobby is elitism and snobbery, not beginner level workmanship"

So I posted this in the "Cosplay Pet Peeves" thread, but I feel like this also applies to rude cosplay comments.

I was trying to find a good photo shoot location for my Wedding Ashe cosplay from Final Fantasy 12. As you may have figured out, the costume is a wedding dress, and one of the first places I thought of for a great shoot location would be inside a church.

A friend of mine was kind of close with his pastor, so he offered to ask him for me if it would be okay to use the church for a quick photo shoot. The answer from the pastor....."No. Cosplay is the devil's hobby."

Alrighty then....

WHAT !?!?!? hahahahahahahahahahaha probably the only excuse he could think of at the time that would remotely be effective.

I went to Supanova this year (an Australian version of Comic Con/Anime Expo) and I was dressed up as Dark Magician Girl and my friend was dressed up in a Pikachu onsie and we were standing around in the station, ready to get onto the train to take us to the convention when this tradesmen or 'tradies' as we call them in Australia, came off the train we were about to get on and said "You guys look like FUCKING idiots" I was in absolute SHOCK because this was my first time cosplaying and I'm not self confident myself and to have this total random say that to us was disgusting.

The train officer came over as he felt bad and said "Don't worry, he's a really boring person, you guys look fantastic, only the boring will think something as neat as you guys would be distasteful" - what a guy

^ I know !!! he really made us feel better afterwards. I just prefer to get to the convention as fast as possible so I don't have to deal with nasty people like that. Perhaps when I grow into a more confident cosplayer, it will be like water off a duck's back but for now >.< Jesus it was harsh hahahaha

My aunt told my sister that she looked like a hooker in her Shizuka cosplay.

My sister doesn't really stick up for herself even when she's upset and didn't really respond to her, but I said, "No she doesn't, she looks like a bartender." She realized what she said had been offensive when I go mad, but tried to cover it up with, "Oh, but she looks like a hot hooker," like that was any better.

She wasn't even showing much skin, the skirt was just short. And that comment came from a woman who would tell me, "If I had your body I would show it off." I guess I would understand it if it came from someone who was very conservative, but she certainly isn't. :/

I don't really get offensive comments. I just get the occasional, "Why do you always dress like a boy?" but that's not offensive.

Cosplayed as rainbow dash at last year's otakon, got told I wasn't "over-confident" enough.

I have social anxiety.

I don't plan on cosplaying rainbow dash again, heh.

I apologize if this is the wrong place to vent out my frustration but I really did consider this rude:

I was gone for vacation and work for a couple days. I never bring my laptop with me when I'm on trips since I want to stay away from social media and have fun traveling since I never get to travel a lot. I recently came home and went on my Facebook (cosplay page) to see all the messages I've received and got this one message from a random guy who apparently has been sending me messages and got all pissed just because I didn't reply in a couple weeks. They were nice messages at first, but then really creepy messages, and then he called me a word that is very offending to me; I came home the day he even sent it. After I replied saying that he was being very rude, he called me disgusting things about me and my cosplays. I blocked the guy. I've never been insulted like this in my entire life...

I was cosplaying as Patty, and my bosom friend was Liz at the loal shopping mall with my best friend, and we did what we normally did, we stopped to get FRICKEN MAGNIFICENT soft pretzels, we sat at a table and were "people watching" (we pick to people and imagine what would happen if they were (insert senario here) and we talk about it, without making them feel like we were talking about them) and then we saw this big trucker guy and my counselor and it was great, and then her and i started to laugh, and if you knew my true real deal laugh, you know its the end product of Dr Franken Steins personality, and Light Yagami's japanese voice actors laugh.
Anywho, i laughed and my counselor looked at me after he pointed the trucker lookin dude to the bathroom (which wasnt too far off from what we though he would ask him... Imagine this big buff guy who could pop your head off just by flexing his arm muscles with an awesome beard and a star spangled banner du rag asking this tiny lookin guy "mr? Wheres the bathroom? I have to go pee pee") and he pointed his nose to the ground, and pinched the bridge of his nose, and shook his head "Oh boy" and then walked on and waived at my friend.

Then we walked to the anchor store, and we went to an area where the music was loud, and we heard our jam- applause and we were singing and dancing, and then i felt a hand on my shoulder, i looked at the hairy mangled mess and screamed (i didnt know who it was). It was my counselor. He looked at me and said "i now fully understand why you need a counsellor. Tomorrows going to be interesting, isnt it?" i know he meant no harm, and he had a warm smile on his face when he said it, but i just thought of how long he must have been looking at me, laughing and reading children books and dancing stupidly to that song... It was embarrassing, lol.. At least we didnt run into anyone at my school whilst we were there... But the guy at the pretzel place hit on me... I wasnt even wearing the patty costume.. I was only "in character casual" cosplaying...

Long story short, look to make sure your counsellor isnt anywhere near when you do something silly in cosplay...
