I heavily encourage people to try this competition out if it interests them. I participated in it this past year at CC26 and had a great time. ^_^ I found it to be much more relaxing than a regular masquerade, very chummy and upbeat backstage*, and fun to see what everyone else did with the pattern.
The directors were fab, and the competition itself is a blast. HEAVILY ENCOURAGE !!! ~~~> (hypnoitc stare) XD*(upbeat even tho it was an early morning after several nights of partying!) XD

Hey gang,
with Halloween coming, costumery patterns will start to be on sale, so start looking now to save on these and get an early start. We always get bogged down with the competition costumes last minute, so we often try to do these fun no pressure costumes early, check them off the list, and relax.

If you're referring to McCalls 4997, it is just the outer dress/coat. There isn't any inner sleeve or under dress. For mine, I've decided to just make a small skirt to go underneath. I'm sure you can use any other skirt pattern you want for it.

It's a single-pattern contest in that everyone must use this one, single pattern, not that everyone must ONLY use one pattern. You can combine any other pattern with the single pattern as long as your single pattern is recognizable in the result (i.e. - not underwear that no one can see).

OK, now that I understand the one pattern contest, I'm in. I just ordered the Butterick pattern and I have a concept. It won't be very cowboyish, at least not in the normal sense.
Question is, do I have to use the whole pattern or could I just make the shirt without the duster? (Might not have the time.) |

If you are doing it for the fun of it, then do whatever you like, or can get to.
If you want it to be judged, I would think that the judges might like to see the coat. but that doesn't mean you might get an award for just the shirt. up to them. but in my opinion, nothing at Costume-Con should be built unless it's for fun, so do as you like, and hope for the best. I promise to clap and say YAY either way
