Hiya! These are cosplay forums, so generally, they cover the topic of cosplay. I'm not exactly sure how much you know and don't know, so I'm sorry if it's redundant.. Cosplay is just short of "costume play" or the hobby of creating and wearing costumes that are made to look exactly like characters from anime, manga and games. So these forums are dedicated to helping people who love cosplaying and making costumes, by having separate forums for different issues like makeup, wigs, sewing, crossplay, and etc.

Also, there are many forums for individual conventions that take place across America and in different countries, where people can plan photoshoots, meetups, and discuss accommodations and schedules for the convention, and make new friends.

I don't want to be silly and say more ^^;
If there's anything that still seems vague, please ask me..
Sorry if all that was sort of redundant.. :x

Hi there. ^^ Welcome to the site. ^^

Cosplay just means costume play, as SanaK said. You can cosplay from ANYTHING and it's still cosplay. Anime, manga, video-games, Disney, comic books, cartoons, movies... You name it! ^^ Some people even create their own characters, or create original outfits for existing characters. ^^ There are a lot of possibilities. ^^

A good guide to get started can be found here: http://www.cosplaywiki.org/index.php/Beginner%27s_guide

Also, try the newbie forum on this site. ^^

Good luck. ^^

*glomps* Welcome to the site and the world of cosplay!

Kazephyr is right as long as your dressing up as a character of something it's cosplay...I know for me and some of the people on the Trinity Blood costume thread we love love LOVE to butcher the characters into our own costumes!

There is also EGL (Gothic Lolita) Which is a fashion style, but a lot of characters wear it as their costumes, theres a board for that too. Enjoy your stay on the site and if you have any questions you can feel free to PM me to do just that or talk ^___^

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Reason I was asking is I have just recently (in the past year) started making costumes from movies and games like venkman (from ghostbusters) and Masterchief (from halo 3). Fun stuff!

I was wondering what all is involved with the events, how long they last, how big they are, what age range of people participate, and how much they are?

I am definately a noob so any advice will help and there is no such thing as "redundant" when it comes to a noob like me! thanks again!

Well, most events have a program you will recieve upon entering. On said program there should be a list of contests, panels, and events taking place that day. Cons generally last about three days, though it varies.

Most people at cons are in the 16-27 range, though there are a LOT of exceptions. I've seen little kids and people past forty, so it's not like a teens-only event or anything.

Some cons are free, but most charge admittance fees. These are usually about 30-70 USD. Also, there are merchant's floors and things, if you're interested, so it's a good idea to bring some money if you can. ^^
