Disney Cinderella Fairy God Mother costume
My sister has asked me to make her a costume for Halloween.
She wants to do the Fairy God mother from Disney's Cinderella. I have the fabric in the right color and the pink for the sleeves and bow. My question is this. She's a bigger girl (2x) and I'm used to making outfits for myself (large) and not others. Is there any good patterns I can alter for the cloak part of her outfit? Any suggestions on how to resize a XL pattern for someone who is over 2XL. I know I will have to mock up a pattern for her size, I've just never mocked up a pattern before. I'm also used to using my dress form and my form will not work for her. Any suggestions on how to make her big sleeves too would be helpful as the only patterns I have are for normal jacket sleeves. The skirt and shirt she has are the easy part, it's the cloak part that is stumping me.

I would say just find a pattern for a short sleeve t-shirt, and then do an elastic plain long skirt. Find another pattern for a large sleeved cape/coat Simplicity 2940 is good, just add a hood. Silver wig from ebay and a wand and its good to go!

Theme Park Version:
Fairy Godmother wears a Light Blue Synthetic Cloak with wide sleeves, a full hood, and a Pink Synthetic Bow. The fabric is akin to crushed lamee. She wears a white "grandmaw" style wig with curly bangs and a bun. You should be able to find a pattern for the cloak with Simplicity as they have a lot of historical and costume patterns that would work. Godmother's proportions are generally created with a "fat suit" though--something I found disheartening when I worked there. |
