Constructing a Totoro

I'm making a Totoro costume for my boyfriend for Sugoi 09, and we wanted to get some thoughts from people familiar with making costumes like this.

I'm thinking of using a harness and a flexible frame to give the costume volume, and he was thinking of just stuffing if with so much eggcrate and pillow-filler to give it the volume. We want it to be able to withstand at least mild glomping.

Also, we're unsure of what exact type of fabric would look and feel best. I don't want to use faux fur, because I think it would look tacky and disintegrate fairly quickly. Wool felt might work, but it's not very soft...

THoughts? Idea? Gimme anything.

Fursuit/Mascot Thread
Sarcasm-Hime's Mascot Tutorial

The Fursuit/Mascot thread has some links to sites that carry good quality furs that won't disintegrate. If you truly don't want to use fur, why not try fleece? It's very soft and durable.
